Default What can you do with an automatic 2.5L to improve performance?

I have an automatic 2.5L TS wagon. It's very heavy (3100 lb base weight). This weight will go down a little as I swap in 16" alloys. What type of mods can I do that will improve:

(1) acceleration off a start; and
(2) higher end power (specifically climbing hills)

without affecting fuel economy, being all that much noticably louder, or voiding warranty on a large area of the car (i.e. powertrain)?

Thanks for your advice. Let's not go into manuals being superior, and what not--I know they are.

Thanks a lot. But that would void the powertrain. Seriously. What mufflers are good for adding high RPM power? Will an airfilter help? Do I need a performance muffler and intake, or can I just have the one?

You could look at a new torque convertor, or do what someone I know is doing--> get a shift kit, it makes the car shift faster *duh *. I believe Cobb tuning sells em. If you want to look at getting a stick tranny, you should just buy a new car (it would be cheaper than doing a tranny swap).

Any of the engine mods you see listed in this forum will improve power, regardless of the transmission. However, I personally feel that the bang for buck on anything more than a high-flow filter, and possibly a CAI, just isn't worth it. Short of a turbo, you're talking about $1-2k, not counting labor, to realize a 10-20 HP gain.

For long hill climbs, I generally just drop down into 3rd to prevent an up-shift into 4th.

take out your stock muffler and you will get 5-7hp at the high end, but you will have no low end power..

- Cold Air Intake...GanzFlow, Cobb Tuning etc..
- Lightened Underdrive Pulley
- Any exhaust system in the "Products"
- Better plugs and wires (ditch the Champions)
- Headers
- High Flow Cats
- Larger throttle body (Cobb tuning)
- Air/Fuel monitor and adjustment (you will most certainly be running rich.
- ECU reset after each mod.

When making a all-motor car, every little bit helps!

-Andy

EDIT: Oh Yeah, get as much STi stuff as you can and have a dealer install it. I think that is the only way to truely avoid warrenty B.S.

Use high quality ATF oil to keep the torque convertor cool. too much heat will kill power as well..

ASK THEM FIRST BEFORE YOU POST!!

<-- the price of TC:
PTS TORQUE CONVERTOR SERVICE 498.00
PTS HYDROSYSTEM SERVICE 698.00

you have to send your TC to me to modify it, it takes 3-5 days.
-->
that's what the told me.
