Who have DIY?
Okay question for all of you conversion guys, how many and who of you have done a conversion DIY styly or at leat without having to pay a company to even part of it for you? I'm just trying to size up my competition for a swap. I'm trying to find out if I have all of the knowledge that I will need right here on the forum or if I should jsut take it to someone to have done.

everything and anything thats been touched on my car has only been touched by me... i dont have the money to pay anyone and its kinda cool telling someone that its 100% done by me
the whole 2.5 swap (pulled motor out of wrecked forester), swiching the dash, welding up my own headerback exhaust, and soon a RWD conversion, WRX brake conversion, and a ton of other stuff i'm prolly forgetting. those are the major things. i dont know if i should take the center diff for the RWD conversion to a shop to be welded up. i do have access to a 220 mig welder and im sure that should be plenty for hardened steel. edit: ive been reading up on welding, and i guess ive gotta learn arc welding now.... mig would not work too good for this! lol Last edited by PRIOR; 03-04-2004 at 01:12 AM. |

I suspect you meant something else, and in that case, I started with a 1993 "L" FWD. I did have professional advice that came as a condition of my buying parts from them. But all, 100%, of the labor was mine. Lots of fun for me and if I can do it, you should have an easy time since it was my first try at this level. I am prepping a 2005 JDM Forester XT engine now as the second motor to go in the car. Even funner! Come to the 22 March all Subaru track day at Buttonwillow and see a dozen conversions. No no, come to the Cobb meet on the 29 of March and see my conversion.
I have done all the work myself. No professional advice, just what I gathered from the forums and what I learned. If my heads are bad I may be doing something stupid with an STi something... don't know yet. -Jon |

This isn't that many people that have DIY a conversion, hmmm. Maybe I should reconsider my plans to dive head first into an engine swap.

Mike, check out the stickies at the top of the forum. That will give you a good starting point.

My USDM conversion is 100% DIY, and 100% complete, including WRX cruise control and ALL systems working, EVAP etc, so no CEL.

All depends on how mechanically inclined you are. Up to this point i've done everything on my 96 legacy. I'm in the process of swapping in a jdm turbo engine and doing a auto to manual swap among other things.
Just about every question i've posted has not come back with any answers or any that really help most of the time. So that means you have to be very resourceful and know how to count on yourself. Unfortunately for me, i'm doing some stuff that has been done before or has been done very little, so there's not that much info out there like in the honda world. Brent |

I never had a p1499... although I did have a p1230 for a while, it was an issue with the fuel controller that needed to be resolved. There's no need to swap fuel tanks on MY2000+, it has all the same components for the EVAP as a 2002. |

And even so, you can spoof the sensor.

Reflash?
Can those gas tank sensor codes be deleted in an ECU reflash?

If they can find where they are stored on the ROM, yes. I hadn't bothered to ask Trey about that since I think I can correct them properly.
