Default Rear Brake Pads More Worn Than Fronts

I just had the 30K service on my 04 WRX (at non-dealer shop), and the tech showed me that the rear brake pads are pretty much done, while the fronts have about 40% left. I don't do any racing/hard driving, and the only mods i have are bigger wheels/tires, and B&G springs.

He said I should talk to the Subaru dealer and ask why the wear in the rear is so much worse than in the front, considering the fronts usually wear down before the rears. He mentioned that Subarus usually go to 40K before the rear pads need to be replaced.

Is something wrong with my rear brakes, or is this normal wear and tear? I do use my parking break whenever i park the car, not sure if that would cause excess wear.

Same here, on my pre-purchase inspection on a 29k rex, the mechanic said the rears were at 20% and fronts were 50%. The subie mechanic thought that it was a little unusual but wasn't alarmed......

My '04 does the same thing, and generates more dust from the rears, too.

I've always suspected the EBD as the cause.

We have heard about folks seeing increased rear brake wear on EBD cars, but mostly when the majority of their driving is around town at low speeds with lots of stop and go. The EBD systems are thought to be using more rear brake than the front in order to keep the car flatter under braking which is better for the driver and their passengers. Under more aggressive braking the fronts will be doing more work making pad wear more normal. We have not done any tests to prove this but are seeing this happen more and more on EBD cars.

Ya, my fronts are at like 50***37; and my rears are at like 15%... so I was like ... wait, wtf?

Glad I saw this thread and found out it wasn't just me. All my driving (well 95%) is city driving, so that makes a lot of sense.

same here, I have an 04, do mostly city driving, and my rears wore down faster than my fronts.

It has nothing to do with the handbrake, that has a seperate drum setup inside the hub of the rear brakes.

I recently took my car in for service, and the tech there showed how my rear brake pads were done, and the front barke pads were still good.

I guess it is normal.

Default Happens on Honda's also

In addition to my Subie, I also own an Accord, and the same thing happens on the Accord. Had to replace rear pads at about 25 K, but didn't change the front pads until 43K. Majority city driving. The Honda forums have the same kind of discussions about why it happens. No consensus, but agreement that its common.

I have a 05 wrx. Same scenario here. Except my rear right one more worn than the rear left. But, in the big picture my rear is more than the front.
City Driving, also very agressive driver.
Also, my rear right is making noise, like metal on metal.
BTW, what is EBD? I'm guessing Electronic Brake...but dont know the rest.

I have an 05 STi with 34.5K on it. Rears just got changed by dealer. Fronts are at 30%.
Rears were making a clicking noise from take off going forward or reverse. Just an FYI in case anyone hears the same and wonders what it is. You know how we all drive around with our heads out the window wondering what all these noises are.

That clicking noise is pad shift that is extremely common with the factory Brembos. You may find that your new pads end up doing the same thing.

Normal. Under light use the rears wear more.

A bias thing.

Thread necro, terribly sorry:

Should this same effect occur on my '00 2.5RS? It probably doesn't have EBD, yet my rears are 100% totally gone down to bare metal after 30k miles and my front almost look like they haven't been used at all, perhaps 10-15% used.

Should I be looking at potential issues, or is this just how they are?
