Default 2012 2.0i Impreza factory Sat install

I decided to put sirius in my 2012 Impreza 2.0i Sport Premium with factory type B radio. I ended up buying a similar radio from a Forester and a used Sirius Tuner. I had to buy an antenna and I bought an interior windshield type. anyway, install wasn't too bad, but I did have do figure out my own way to mount the tuner and run the antenna wire because my car was not prewired (I had hoped, but it was not).

Step one: Remove glovebox

Step two:
Disconnect manual controls. the right side is accessable through the opening where the glovebox was. the driver side is a bit harder. The manual says to remove the lower instrument panel, but I opted to just crawl under the dash instead to remove it.

drivers side

Step three:
start to pry bezel, the manual suggested to start on the right side, and I did find that to be easiest. if you get the right spots it pops off really easy. I recommend using 2 plastic pry bars because once you get it started the 2nd can be used to actually pry. It doesn't take very much force at all if you get the right locations.

Step four:
there is a connecter on the back of the four way flasher button that has to be disconnected.

Step five:
You can fully disconnect the heater controls if you want. I ended up disconnecting them because just having the bezel flopped down was scratching my trim. reconnecting the 2 wire connectors on reassembly sucks.

Step six:
Install antenna. Use whatever you want, but I don't like antennas on the outside of my car so I used a windshield mount antenna and mounted it above my rear view mirror.

Step seven:
Install SAT tuner. This was the biggest hassle of the entire process. I couldn't really find a good way to do it, because the brackets that come with the kit don't work on the new 2.0i's. You can get them to mount up, but they interfere with the air vents. I tried a few different things, but ultimately just ended up using some plumbers strap and attached it directly to my new Radio, but this can only be done after the radio is installed.

Step eight:
put it all back together and enjoy

Nice! Does that work with the steering wheel controls and bluetooth mic?

Yup eveything works as it did before.

The radio is a little cumbersome to navigate, but honestly once my favorite channels are programmed that won't bother me

The model number is cp625 i think, looks like the one in a wrx but something must be different because that is a 624. Either way it works, and i only have 170.00 total invested after radio/tuner/antenna

Radio is out of a 2012 Forester, i think 2011 is the same, no idea about 2010. Other than the SAT button it is identical to the one i removed. I believe a radio out of a wrx would be similar as well, model number is cp624 IIRC.

Audio levels are fine, EQ sucks, but so did the other one. The sound is acceptable, but it could be better so I'm going to try new speakers and maybe an amp if speakers aren't good enough.

I'm not sure the year of the tuner, i bought it used from someone who bought it from someone else. But it plugged in and worked so good enough. You would have to check svdx's thread to see when the radios changed, i think for sure anything in the last 5 years will work

Whole setup including antenna cost me 170.00

I'm still searching for the radio with the lcd screen, but no one seems to want to sell those

Thanks for sharing this info!

It appears that an image from your Step 7 is missing. Are you able to fix that?

Also, you say "reconnecting the 2 wire connectors on reassembly sucks" with regard to the heater controls. Why were those connectors so difficult to reassemble?

unfortunately no I can't. they were on my old phone and I accidentally deleted all my pics pretty much that picture was just the tuner sitting on top of the radio, I used a piece of plumbers strap to hold it in place (wrapped over the top and screwed onto the side of the radio)

I disconnected the wires on the back of the heater controls because the whole panel was in my way and scratching up other interior pieces. if i were to do it again I wouldn't have to, but in my quest to find a good place to mount the tuner it had to be done at the time. reconnecting them sucked because the harness is so short, there is no room at all to work.

Interesting. I wonder if it would work to slip the panel into a T-shirt or something to prevent it from scratching other pieces?

Do you think you could have connected the tuner to the radio with Velcro?

I think a tshirt or rag would have worked, but i didn't think of it at the time.

I considered Velcro, but i didn't know how warm it gets in there and i didn't want the adhesive to fail.

OK. My installation will be a little different from yours, because I'm swapping my OEM head unit with a http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0072MZ63A/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00, and will be adding the Sirius functionality with the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030FQVNC/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00. As you can see, this kit includes two separate components. It will be interesting to see where/how I decide to mount them.

I'll figure something out....

Why not just get the pioneer xm tuner, unless there is something you want that only comes in sirius flavor? I would have gone that route, but this was significantly cheaper (170.00 for everything). I will probably upgrade speakers and call it good unless i can find a forester radio with the lcd screen

You will see there isn't much room in there too mount things, i was thinking of makinga bracket to go on the bottom if to mounting wouldn't have worked

I prefer Sirius's programming over XM's. I suspect that the two components in the Pioneer kit are pretty small, so I'm sure I'll be able to mount them someplace. I downloaded the documentation, and they do provide Velcro, so I just need to find some flat surfaces someplace. Zip ties are another option....

You will be disappointed, there aren't many flat surfaces in there.

I've always had xm, this is my first experience with Sirius. For what i want items mostly there, some baseball would be nice though. But i couldn't seem to find a subaru xm tuner for 100, but i did find the sirius so here i am

After I figure out my installation solution, I'll snap some pics and share with the forum. The Pioneer head units are popular around here, so I'm sure others could use this Sirius installation info too.

Will the Pioneer unit swap out easily with our OEM unit and will all the steering wheel functions be retained? That Pioneer unit really looks nice. I had to go into the firmware menu on our OEM radio and disable EQ and Loudness because it sounded washed out with the factory speakers. What difference that made and I also turned off SRS sound. The sound is acceptable but if the Pioneer will drop right in I just might go for it.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "drop right in". In addition to the Pioneer HU (and the Sirius kit I bought, but which is certainly not required), I also bought:
  • a dash kit to fill the void around the HU,
  • a Steering Wheel Control (SWC) module that will allow me to keep my steering wheel's Bluetooth and audio controls (the cruise control functions aren't affected by the HU),
  • a cable harness that will allow me to make the electrical connections between the new HU and the car's wiring without splicing/cutting/crimping into the car's wiring,
  • a parking brake override so that the HU won't lock me out of some functions unless the parking brake is engaged (like bass/treble/balance/EQ)

You'll find lots of good info in this thread:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2312813

By the way, I've heard that the original speakers produce significantly improved audio quality with a good HU replacement, because the amp built into the OEM radio isn't terrific. But you have a Limited, so you already have a better HU than came in my Sport Premium, so you might not notice as much of a difference as I'm expecting.

Hope this helps!

SG, thanks. But I heard otherwise that the stock speakers are horrible...lmao. I do have a pair of the Subaru/Kicker tweets sitting here...

Maybe I'll do the speaker upgrade first then attempt the HU upgrade later as guys have said the Kickers are like night and day over the stock.

I'm sure the new speakers will make an improvement.

But if you read through the other thread I linked to previously, you will see people reporting that they were surprisingly impressed with the stock speakers after replacing just the HU. The EQ adjustments provided by the better HUs brings out what the stock speakers are capable of (or so I've read; I'll see for myself next weekend).

Regardless, getting at the tweeters on top of the dash is super easy; I had the grill off mine on the driver's side when I was hard-wiring my GPS and radar detector. Should be a simple job for you.

fixed the pic of where my tuner is located

here is a view of how it is actually mounted, I tried to use velcro but it sits too high and you can't get the panel back on

Well, that's certainly a cleaner location than mine (in the passenger's footwell area). But with all the futzing around I've had to do (switching from a Sirius tuner to an XM tuner, and next switching from the antenna that came with the XM tuner to a new window-mounted antenna), I would have been ripping my dash apart at least three times before the job was done. So I guess I'll just leave my tuner where it is.

Maybe, if I ever need to get at the rear of the HU again in the future (like if I install a back-up camera), I'll move my tuner to your location.

I'm hoping to not ever take mine apart again. The only reason i will is if i can stumble across the 4.3lcd radio with the sat button, but those are dang near impossible to find
