Got a new bike today. A Cannondale Topstone 105, though it has Ultegra shifters and calipers (apparently there was a supply issue with 105s). I think it should be a good gravel bike.

Nice bike. Yeah, the now 105s haven't been available. Did the price go up with Ultegra?

Apparently there was a fire in a Shimano factory, caused a bunch of supply problems.

Had to look the specs up, I thought those were 650 wheels....700cx40? Hell yeah, sweet ride.

And he got it for the old, lower price. Better spec at a lower price. I told him to jump on it.

With a seat that high and stem that long it seems a size or two up would be better

*shrug* he seems to like it the way it is.

Did a couple tours with some Australian ultra distance type guys and went on a nice MTB ride to a nearby small town for a snack a week or two ago....which leads me to:

Thinking about buying a Trek Boone (CX) frame and another set of wheels so I can end up with a swiss army bike (with a set of wheels for road and a set for off road) after swapping over the components from my Synapse. Just need a new crankset, flat mount calipers and a seatmast for the funky Trek design (which isn't included for some bizarre reason). According to Trek it'll fit up to a 38c tire, which seems sufficient.

I'd love to have an aero bike, but long distance (on and off road) is really starting to sound interesting and those superbikes just aren't made for that sort of thing, plus the style police will shoot you on sight if you use a frame bag to carry a water bladder on one.

Just want to be able to do more stuff and not end up with a collection of bicycles to take care of.

It's nice to have 2 wheelsets, I have one with Challenge Strada Biancas, and another with Donnelly X'PLOR MSOs. I wish I had another with a set of PDXs.

I was pondering a Surly Straggler frame set. Will take 700c or 650b x 42, Blueberry Muffin Top. Not quite Boone territory though.

Other than the stupidly expensive Lefty, the Slate does that.

650x42 for gravel and bike packing (with bladder in frame bag! )

My Soma Wolverine frame fits 50 mm tires. I squeezed 47 mm Schwalbes + full fenders but it's a bit tight. 45 mm + fenders would be better. Also works with the Gates belt--could go full on Rohloff or Alfine 11 for a tourer.

Also, why doesn’t someone make a kids bike that has 20” rims with hybrid/city tires and an 18” rim with MTB tires? Two bikes for a kid that will probably grow 4” in the next 18 months is tough to swallow.

I ended up getting a Ranger bag and a Platypus 70oz bladder with my REI dividend, and that combo (plus two small/regluar sized bottles) is awesome for long rides out into the middle of nowhere with no facilities.

Cannnondale doesn't do frame-only...and I already have a full Di2/Hydro setup. Should be able to sell my Synapse frame/fork to someone wanting to upgrade to carbon on the cheap.

Can you get an 18" bike with disc brakes? You could have a set of MTB rims with street tires.

They make 20” wheel bikes with disc brakes. As far as I know, no one makes an 18” rim. It shouldn’t be rocket science to make one, though. I’ve considered just buying a rigid kid’s MTB with 20” wheels and just putting hybrid rubber on it as needed. I’d just deal with the 1” lower bottom bracket.

there are existing 18" bmx rims and tires. you'd need to have custom wheels built though.

Local guy has a rigid lefty front fork from a Slate that he is giving away. Should I use that and my ample collection of 650b and 700c lefty wheelsets to Segway into an endangered road bike, touring bike, flat bar gravel bike, or family jalopy (flared drops or W flat bars, maybe racks and fenders)? My thinking is I could get a used CAAD10/12, CAADx, or 26” MTB frame, do some cool powder coating on it, and pick an appropriate drivetrain for whatever I decide and have a fun little project. Thoughts?

Current fleet: Race road bike, gravel bike, XC race MTB, trail bike, cheap city bike

If anything, you should segue rather than Segway.

I was going to make it into a terrible, self-balancing ebike. You know how those Lefty forks make the bike difficult to keep upright.

I’m probably going to spring for the Earlyrider for my 5yr old in 6 mos or so.

Early rider had a sweet 3 speed internal hub with belt drive available a few years ago. They don’t seem to carry it anymore, though.
