2015 WRX 6 Speed Shifter Solution
We started the shifter design from the bottom up. We spent a long time trying to see what would result in the most effective shifter at a price point that people would be happy with. It ultimately came down that doing a whole new shifter lever would be costly and a huge pain to install requiring a trip to a local shop instead of being able to do the install at home with basic hand tools.
Once we established that doing a whole shifter assembly was out of the question, the next option was to reduce the throw though the shifter lever on the transmission or to make an adapter to bolt on the bottom of the stock lever arm. We spend some time trying to perfect a shifter adapter, however it ultimately came down to a throw reduction of only 14-18%. This would not be a very noticeable reduction due to space limitations, so that idea was thrown out the window. This left us with one last and final option, of doing a new shifter lever arm on the transmission. We started by removing the factory unit off the car and taking all critical measurements to see how much room we had to work with, how short the shifter could be and how to make it as heavy as possible within the tight space that is available, and give us a satisfactory throw reduction. We found that the stock lever arm is actually quite complex in design to make it as heavy as possible in the available space. By keeping the lever arm heavy the shift effort is reduce, and reduces the "notchy" feel in the shifter that is found in other shifters on the market. This is something that was a huge goal for us from the start, to keep the shifter lever as heavy as possible while being compact enough to fit on the car. With outlined criteria above we started on the design process. Overall we ended up going through about 5 design revisions, ranging from basic to complex until we found a happy middle ground between shifter throw reductions, keeping the weight as heavy as possible, and cost effective manufacturing. To help us in the manufacturing process we utilized FDM printing models that let us get the best possible shifter in terms of feel and fit. To make sure that everyone got the best shifter possible, we started going through revisions of the shifter arm for maximum strength using FEA analysis and reliability that KARTBOY is known for. A shifter that works better then stock and that can outlast the life of the car! After the material and overall design was completed it was time to do simulations, making sure that no matter how hard you shift the part will NOT break! This part is so over-built that it would take over 1200LBS of force on the shifter to break the lever!!! We think it's safe to say that the shifter will be the last thing to break. We settled on using 4130 steel for the shifter arm, as it allowed us to get a heavy part that is strong, durable, and easy to work with. The final weight comes in at 263 grams/ .58lbs to ensure that each shift is as smooth as we can possibly make it. The arm is cast using 4130 steel that is annealed post machining to ensure that the part has no internal stresses that can result in failure. The part is machined to a very tight tolerance post casting on all critical dimensions, to ensure that the final fit and performance are top notch for each shifter arm. For the pin, we opted to do a weld in 4130 billet pin that has been CNC machined for a tight tolerance control and its similar mechanical properties to the lever arm. Even though the pin is not as "beefie" as the arm, we feel that its 120lbf required to break it is more then sufficient to hold up to any shifter duties thrown at it. We made the bottom of the shifter pin as wide as possible to give us a large surface area for load distribution, welding area and to remove any possibility of failure. Proceeding the welding process we send off the entire shifter arm assembly for an nice electrolysis nickel finish. Reason for this is quite simple, corrosion resistance. This final step ensures that the part does not rust no matter what conditions it is exposed to, and can keep you shifting for years to come. After all the hard work, and countless hours of design, testing and researching we are proud to release the KARTBOY 2015+ WRX SHORT SHIFTER! I have installed the very first short shifter transmission adapter to come out to the market and I do not like it because it sacrifices shifting comfort. If I compared the original to the aftermarket I prefer the original because it is a much more smother shift, you do not get the "clunky notchy" feeling. I am looking forward to test your design. Shifter parts are due from our investment cast company tomorrow.
We'll have all hands on deck welding them all up and then they are off to nickel plate. I'd say we'll be shipping mid next week. |

Shifter stopper thingamajig update. Tooling will be done right around the first of the month. They are going to shoot a number of samples to send out to our test group. Once those are all OK'd we'll have a full production run.

The bearing that come with it, is that a shift bushing to replace the oem one(or the Perrin one), or that goes on the new shift bracket?
If not, do you also have one to replace the oem bushing to make shifts more direct/crisp? P.s. Nothing against you guys, but that rally sport direct review is poorly done. It doesn't show the full install, and it doesn't show the difference in shift throws.. |
