I would say "too thick"...5-30 is a good weight!

I agree with Andy. I replaced 5w-30 Mobil 1 with 15w-50 Mobil 1 in my 87 300zx since I thought 280,000 miles might have loosened up the engine a little bit. My mistake, the throttle response suffered, and I had to get the thick stuff out as soon as possible.

I'd use 10w-30 synthetic in the summer time. Motor oils that have a wide spread usually have a lot of viscosity enhancers that can form deposits if they get too hot.

yup, with a turbo car, you don't want an extremely wide viscosity range. The "enhancers" mentioned by Rich10 are the things that tend to burn first in synthetic oils and could lead to coked bearings if you're not careful. That is, assuming that Subaru is BS'ing when they say there's NO NEED to turbo-time the new cars.

Motul can be ordered through any motorcycle dealership and prestige subaru they are a vendor, as for price it can really vary from place t oplace but this is what I use in my daily driver I am building a group N car for rally and Prodrive told me 5w40 motul 300v for the race motor and 300v 5w0 for the road car. IT may cost a little bit more but engine protection is not a place to cut corners. Call up local motorcycle shops they will be able to help.

Yep, Living in S. Fl. I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in my WRX. There is absolutely no problem with using it. Look in the factory manual for oil viscosities..you can use up to 20w-50 depending upon conditions. for extreme driving conditions and heat the higher viscosity is recommended and preferable. My car does lots of stop and go driving puncutated with full boost acceleration. Car runs and idles much smoother using the 15w-50.

I talked to someone at Mobil not too long ago and basically from what I was told the 15-50 does not have the friction modifiers used in the other viscosities.

This is why you can use their 15w 50 in a motorcycle's wet clutch system and not the other viscosities. The other versions will make the clutch slip because they are more slippery.

I don't know if this is good or bad for the WRX but thought I would share some info on this.

I've used both and can't tell the difference in the WRX. That reminds me, gotta change that oil!

Just my 2c.
