Default Samsung's 'transparent truck' tech could save lives

Quote:
Samsung has developed a system that lets drivers see through HGVs so they can overtake safely

Blind overtaking of lorries could soon become a thing of the past thanks to new Safety Truck tech being developed by Samsung. Designed to reduce traffic accidents by giving drivers a ‘transparent’ view through HGVs, the tech has passed its initial testing phrase and is ready to hit the road in prototype form worldwide.

The Korean tech giant's new system consists of a front mounted wireless camera and four exterior monitors, which display the camera’s footage of the road ahead onto the rear of the trailer. This ‘video wall’ allows traffic following behind to see in front of the truck so drivers know that the road is clear and can overtake safely.

Could and it is very useful but I wouldn't want to really pay for it through taxes and price increases to the consumer product market though.

I'm wondering how resistant that "video wall" is to damage from weather and intentional abuse.

I like the concept, but I share AW's concerns. Also, if that tractor trailer parked in Newark, those monitors will disappear in a jiffy.

It would only work half the time because smarthub would always be updating. Then when Samsung's servers go down Samsung products don't work anyway. I don't see the current batch of Samsung products being industrially hardened.

Neat idea, wait till they start with green and red shades to let you know if it's safe to pass or not.

Peace,

Greg

Holy ****! I can't believe I'm reading this from you! I saw an ad for this yesterday on facebook and the absolute first thing that popped into my head is "I bet AW would be all over this"
I gotta say, apparently even you have limits when it comes to frivolous safety tech, and that surprises me.

We agree! For now.....

great... just another screen to distract drivers.

no doubt, useful in some situations, but this just invites drivers to stop paying attention to what's in front of them. I can see it being incredibly easy to pay attention to the screen and not the guy merging into you from an adjacent lane.

distraction. do not want.

Outrageous clam: Samsung is sued as soon as someone derps it in a head-on, claims truck video "was clear"; screens removed next day.

OR

Idiots in 2 cars doing through-the-truck-selfies to eachother...

At this point this is more of a proof of concept than anything. Is it neat? Yep. Is it something that may happen in the future? Maybe. Hell, this would be nice just to know that the jackass in the truck just blew through an orange light that is going to be red by the time you reach it Damned tandem trailers.

I have to wonder how many people will drive into the back of the truck?

Oh WRXHillBillyClimb, I think I found a video of you in your Evo trying to show off!

For the record, THIS isn't so much safety as it is too much information for the average person/driver. Knowledge isn't always power. Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously doesn't know what the word "apply" means in "apply that knowledge." Someone might see and KNOW it's clear to overtake but that's not the entire equation. I'd have to say this would cause just as many accidents from attempted overtaking as it would with distracted driving (or failure to perceive depth/brake lights LOLOLOL).

You're supposed to "prepare" per the manual when you approach a traffic light. But yeah, I'd like to see it. However I'm not sure I'd like to pay for it in subsidiaries since we both know it's more distracting than helpful to the general driving populace.
