These may not be exact, but this is typically what an HID bulb will look like.
And a halogen bulb will look similar to this.
Right on. Thanks for the help. I am assuming that this was installed by the dealer because it looks 100% stock (I always thought my Premium model had the adjustable lights from the factory). However, kind of fishy about the leather seats..ha...

Either way, I will let you know what I find out. If I in fact do have HID Lowbeams, I will be looking at how to upgrade these bulbs....

That looks like the philips 85122+ bulb which is in fact an hid bulb. I saw some where else you are interested in s2k projectors. The s2k projectors are one if the best But you are going way out of the way for only slight improve. The effort to source and install new projectors is not worth it in my opinion. Maybe if you were upgrading from halogen it would make sense. With oem HID's, the only thing I would even consider is putting in a clear lens.

Yeah, after research I have basically ruled out the S2K projectors. I will be going with the clear lens and the CBI bulbs. I was also thinking (since I will be taking apart the housing to put the clear lens in) about maybe installing some sort of after-market, direct replacement projectors. Anything along these line that you would recommend that don't require any huge modifications?

The only thing I would maybe do beside clear lenses would be a custom shield, the STI projectors have been modified with a very nice results by other members here I believe. Or maybe it was at HiDPlanet.

Or you go all out on a custom retrofit but that would probably be more involved than what you are looking for. There is possibly a retro-quick kit at TRS that would fit the STI headlights but I would personally not replace the OEM quality sti oem projector with a lower quality aftermarket projector, especially with how nice the sti are once modded.

I am not going retrofit...But, tell me more about this shield modification. Would you be so kind to provide a link, aside from this one.....http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2307682

Custom shield is what I was going to recommend. Greenkouki from hid planet I hear is the best. Only problem is you have to do without headlights for a few days.

... Sorry for high jacking the thread

I was also going to mention greenkouki but was not sure if he worked on sti headlights or not. In any case he is an expert and any thread you find about him doing custom shields will be relevant. Spend some time at hidplanet.com this is a very good place to learn about this. I'll let you know if I find specific links.

Did you buy the car used? Maybe the previous owner installed HID's.

If you have a functional leveling switch/motor than you are probably right, you have HIDs. But then that means either your car is not a premium model or... somebody else installed them before you owned the car. Check your vin against the lemons

On the plus side, if you already have the HIDs then you don't to waste your time on the h11 to h9. Which btw is not as spectacular as people here make it seem.

If you look at your vin #. What is the 7th digit? You should be able to figure out exactly what model it is with this decoder. Maybe the dealer thought they sold you premium.

"then you don't to waste your time on the h11 to h9. Which btw is not as spectacular as people here make it seem."

That's bull****. There is a real actual lumen output increase, and it makes a substantial difference.

If you tried it, and you did not see much of a difference, maybe your headlights are adjusted to low or something. If you didn't do the mod, then you don't know what you're talking about.

Did someone say greenkouki modded STi projectors?

So I was waiting for my stock headlight bulbs to burn out before doing this. But almost 4 years and 108,000mi later, they still haven't failed lol.

I got tired of waiting so I swapped them in.
The difference is definitely noticeable.

I'm not worried about the power draw, as the car is using the same gauge wire for the high beams anyway.

After going through 3 sets of Osram Nightbreaker h11's in only a year (friggin pathetic...), I decided to pull the trigger and do this mod. The light difference from OEM h11 to Philips flourescent h9's was a HUGE difference. For one, the color output is now white instead of a dull yellow... which helps me see things clearly. This helped increased my line of vision and it doesn't look much brighter to oncoming traffic. Not only this, I wound up spending only $12 for the Philips bulbs as opposed to $56 for the Osrams AND they'll last a lot longer.

Interestingly enough, my Sylvania H9 bulbs were branded Osram on the bulb itself.

Just did this mod last weekend after I had painted the headlights and man oh man does this make a big difference. When I first got the car, sometimes at night I wasnt sure if my headlights were on and would double check and they always were but the light was so dim. With the Phillips H9 in now that problem is gone and the extra output is enough for me to save the money on doing a Retrofit.

Any tips for this mod? Got the bracket/harness from ijdmtoy coming in Saturday ($12 is worth the safety blanket to me), and Philips H9 standard 65w bulbs.

1. Plug it in
2. Enjoy it
3. Forget about it

Our high beam wire is the same gauge as low beam. It won't be an issue.

So, I have this H9 conversion and have had it for awhile. I turn on my lights and notice one of them is out. I pull it out and the ****ing harness melted. The part that clicks with the inside of the bulb socket thing. The green part on the inside was all melted.

Is there a simple way to fix this? Like can you buy a harness and cut the old one off and solder this one on?
Thanks

That's no bueno... Haven't checked my harnesses since doing my h9 conversion. I'm thinking I should check mine now seeing as I use my headlights often for extended periods of time.

If I were you, I would throw my h11's back on and see if your dealership will fix it under warranty.

Sounds like a good seal was not made and moisture might have got in there. Think you are talking about that green rubber seal that keeps moisture out so not to cause arching/melting.

My vehicle is an 09 so it's def out of warranty. I was very surprised too. I doubt you have this problem though as many have not

It could have been some moisture but I just don't see how. Yeah, it's prob that rubber part but I couldnt tell if it's rubber or plastic because it melted the **** out of it.

Where can I find a replacement that will not break the bank?

Oh, ok. I was just assuming that you had a '12+ Impreza. Wish I could help you out with finding a new harness. Good luck.

If it's just the connector that melted you can get replacement ones for fairly cheap, however if you want the OEM harness from what i'm to understand (I tried to get one for my 07 awhile ago) you can't buy just the harness, you have to buy the entire housing assembly it came from. They might be able to fix it for you at an outrageous price.
