Some of the fisrt STI's had problems with engine pinging. I have had mine since June though and have had no problems. However you need to be careful with the octane of the gas. Other than that I am not aware of any outstanding problems.

Yep, the pinging problem has been fixed. One thing though, some trannies have not been filled with fluid very much (near the low mark). So have them check that before you drive off the lot with it.

No ping issues here. I got one of the second batch STi's in September. As Thumper23 said, check the fluids. Check everything for that matter. The biggest problem I've had with the car is there are a lot of loss items including the glove box, center console, and an overly tight trunk. All of these things are minor tho and can be adjusted. You'll love the car.

Sorry that should be "loose items"

make sure your dealer does the PDI. a lot of STis (and WRXs for that matter) are delivered out of alignment.

as far as long term stuff goes i don't know of any serious problems. the motors which have blown up are few and far between, and i don't think anybody has blown a tranny.

What are they supposed to align it before they deliver it??

Let me clear it up. I know from the Factory the car is aligned. It kinda sounded like the dealer has to RE-align it. Or where you saying they are suposed to inspect the alignment. That what I thought.

cars get moved around a lot between the time they leave the factory and when they arrive at the dealership. they spend a lot of time strapped down on a car carrier (ship) a car carrier (truck) and who knows how carefully they have been handled. as a result a car that was aligned at the factory may not be aligned when it arrives at the dealership. my wrx was delivered with a bent rear strut. and almost everybody who got a first allocation STi had problems with steering wheel alignment. it's just good to make sure that the dealer checks it so you don't have to go back later.

I've heard this too, but fortunately, mine didn't have this issue, even though it was a first run allocation in July. Unfortunately, however, I did have a pinging issue. ( I won't go into detail since this horse has been sufficiently beaten here.) I took the car in for re-flashing and haven't a problem since. The only other thing one might perceive as a "problem" is the poor gas mileage, in my opinion. However, since I didn't buy the car for it's fuel economy, I could care less about it. I've just heard other folks complaining about that quite a bit.

But, mechanically, I am extremely happy with my car.
