Looking for a place to buy a helmet in tri-state
So, I am hoping to hit a couple of auto-x and track days this summer. I'd rather not rent and put my sweaty head in someone elses sweaty helmet.
Can anyone recommend a good shop to try on/test fit a helmet in the NNJ/SNY area? Helmet has to be snell 2000+ rated I believe. Also, recommendations on brands to look for/avoid would be helpful. Thanks Bruce. Oh, not knowing what to look for, I found this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SNELL...Q5fMerchandise

That's an "M" rated helmet. For track events you want an "SA" rated one. Some organizations won't accept an M rated helmet for automotive events.
And, you should buy it in person to be sure it's sized properly. A poorly fitted helmet can at best be uncomfortable and at worst fail to protect you in an accident. |

Driving Impressions if you want local. Definitely get an SA 2005 if you can, it will last you longer than an SA2000 helmet.
For online, I usually shop at Saferacer.com -mike PS: I may have a nearly new one you can try on at the shop when you come down. |

Thanks guys.
Mulder, that's why I am asking, I really have no idea what to look for. Thanks I'll check out DI tomorrow from work. They are only about 1.5 hours away, may be visiting NNJ anyway. Hoping to do my first track event and won't be near e-town before the auto-x on March 29. |

Mike,
Thanks for the offer. I think I'll probably be an xl as I have a fat head. Hoping to do my first auto-x out on long island (tobay beach) in march. Trying to find some good (and "relatively" cheap) track days too. Never done it before, but always wanted to. Figured I'd hold off on track days until I get the coilovers on, prob ably late april/may. Also need it a little warmer for the r-comps. |

well i'd try marones in newburgh and ask them.... motorcycle helmets are different i know that much...
size wise yeah make sure it fits... everybrand is different. And fyi the pads do break in if its snug. And you can change the pad in most helmets too.. and shoot for shoei... they're the best in the biz... http://www.shoei-helmets.com/Helmet....titec&h=13&t=1 thats approved for everything except sa.. your gonna pay alot for a helmet... and do not get a open face worst helmets ever. i personally like this one... it's the stig sir! http://www.sstmotorsports.com/Impact...ash-rchamp.htm Last edited by evoeater8; 02-16-2009 at 10:36 PM. |

I have yet to be turned away from a track with my Snell M2005 helmet.
IIRC the only difference is the nomex lining. |

Sell M rating is rated for a single hit, the SA rating not only adds the fire protection but also protects from multiple hits like you might have in a car IIRC. I know that NASA/PDA both require SA rated helmets. -mike |

I haven't been turned away for wearing an M2000 rated helmet either, but it's time for a new one and I will be getting an SA2005 for this year.
There are differences in testing, here is the info straight from Snell: http://www.smf.org/faqs.html#7 Definitely try them on before you buy. I discovered I had an Arai shaped head. |
