Did a little work on the car today. Installed the 9005 LED DRL's. They are pretty bright and high beam function is still retained. Won't know for sure till it gets darker how bright they really are.
Tried to do the seat mod but couldn't lift the rear portion of the seat cover high enough to see what I needed to do. I'll just live with it for now and hope that Subaru releases a TSB for seat back replacement. I spend a lot of time on IWSTI look for inspiration and in the process I found a post where a member dremeled out part of his grille to increase airflow to the intake. I took a look at the setup on our cars and saw that there is quite a restriction so out came the dremel to remedy that. So here is a picture of the front grille and the beginning of the intake before the air filter. As you can see airflow is blocked by the panel just behind the grille opening. So what I ended up doing is tracing the openings of the grille with a sharpie and dremeling out the plastic to more or less match the grille. After that I plastic welded grille material (can be found at Home Depot) behind the openings to keep large debris out. Here is the end result...hood still open. Hood closed.

did you do both sides? or just the intake side?
I was planning on doing this, but will likely make my own sport grill. I'd be curious if you notice any performance advantage from this. |

My guess is that MPG might increase slightly, that's probably about it. I'm going to go with a a Cosworth drop in filter and I'll be modding the intake tube so there might be a light increase in performance from doing that. |

Have you deleted the intake silence? By the front passenger side wheel?

I've been thinking about the intake/grill mod as well. It seemed like a really counter-intuitive design from the factory until you start thinking about RAIN!!! Living in Pa, it rains alot. I am afraid to jam water straight into my filter. By all means, it makes total sense otherwise. Anyone else thought about this??? The mod looks very good though. Very nicely done.

It's still too early to tell but it seems that MPG had increased and the butt dyno seems to think there is a bit more power. Of course its hard to say if what I'm noticing is correlated to the ECM reflash, the grille mod or both. Either way the car feels good.

Pulled the trigger on the materials for the custom intake. I'll be modelling it after a cold air intake from La Chute Performance in Canada. I will be retaining the factory air box and dropping in a Cosworth air filter. Materials should be here for next weekend.

I like it so far and what is planned. But I'd ditch the s-techs. Find better springs that aren't strut killers. Like H&R

Did a little shopping around and research and will most likely go with the H & R springs... Last edited by italia490; 07-22-2012 at 02:15 PM. |

Are they much brighter than the halogens? Are they plug and play, or did you have to do a lot of modifications to use them? How is their dispersal (do you get flashed by oncoming traffic)? Where did you buy them?
Also, the LEDs are just for your DRLs, right? You used HIDs for your headlights, right? |

I did get a compliment on my muffler delete though, they asked who did my muffler, and what brand it was, etc... lol. (This was before they lifted the car up) |

Which is when you add an amp, you should also beef up the stock wiring to be able to handle the extra current. I added 4 gauge wire from (1) the alternator to the battery, (2) battery to chassis, and (3) engine/trans to chassis. This lets the electricity flow better (try sucking a milkshake through a tiny straw, then same shake with a big straw...) That's all it does, so I am not sure how that would affect the oil pressure sensor. I'll keep an eye on the light, if it gets brighter or just doesn't go away, I'll bring it back and see about doing the same ECM reflash you did. |

Well, its never been an issue in any of my vehicles. 4 Ga wire is for pretty high wattage gear. if you dont have a cap, 1.5 farad should work fine, i suggest you do and see if that solves the problem. Back to Italia build

I started late yesterday afternoon on fabbing the intake tube. I installed it this morning and will going for a test drive shortly. There is what appears to be a breather hose on the bottom of the stock intake going to maybe a PCV valve...I'll post pics and a driving impression later today.

Here we go with some pictures......
Here is the La Chute Performance cold air intake which I was trying to copy. This one retails for $425 (Canadian $$$$ I think). Here is what I started with...3" mandrel bent tube that was already powder coated black, 1 hump hose, 2 straight couplers and 6 SS T-clamps. Here is a picture of the hose that goes on the underside of the stock intake that I didn't see until trying to remove it. Here is the intake mocked up. Here is the final product. I went with aluminum for the intake tube. Air Raid and a build your own kit made out of plastic but the tube alone costs about the same as what I was able to get all my components for. I lengthened the hose using a straight ribbed connecter and attached it to the intake tube with a brass nipple that threaded into the side. After driving the car yesterday here is what I noticed. Under normal conditions, the sound of the intake is unchanged, throttle response seems a tad crisper. WOT is a different story though. The sound of the intake takes on a deeper note and right around 4k RPM's it feels like the engine comes alive. I filled up the tank shortly after getting the ECM reflash and performing the grille mod. It's been over 2 weeks since then and I have driven a total of 215 miles and still have half a tank of gas. We'll see what kind of difference the intake tube has. |
