Default Help me buy a laptop, OT!

I'm shopping for a laptop PC for my wife and kid to use/share, so we can all ignore each other in person, instead of in separate rooms.

Requirements:

- Wifey has to be able to process photos and do word processing on it. She imports snapshots from her nursery school job and puts them in a little newsletter for the parents. That pretty much rules out any tablet, I think.

- Other activities will include streaming TV show and movie watching, and probably lots of teen Googling for terms like "Niki Minaj" and "macklemore thrift shop".

- I don't think I want or need a touch screen or Windows 8. But can I still get Windows 7 machines?

- It will stay around the house, so it doesn't need to be Ultrabook light or thin. Being a little thicker and tougher would probably be a survivability advantage, actually.

I'm open to Mac, but they seem kind of expensive.

Suggestions?

1. Walk into Best Buy
2. Say the following verbatim "Look cockbag, I want the cheapest laptop you have that is not one of those little bitch netbooks and if I find one cheaper than the one you are about to take me to I will snap kick you in the tit."

I did this like 4 years ago and got some janky ass Acer for $400. If it explodes tomorrow, I will perform the above 2 steps again. And since you know me personally you are one of the few here that can actually realize that I am telling the truth. And you already know Step 3 is to smoke cigarettes.

I picked up my HP Pavilion M6 last fall as soon as I realized that Windows 8 was going to be the standard operating system on new computers. I have no issues with Photoshop CS6 or playing videos, though my streaming is limited by poor internet service. I haven't been gaming much, though it can handle 2-3 year old games on relatively high graphic settings, and CS:0 and SC5 on medium-low settings.

A few nifty items are the light-up keyboard which is great for low-light computing, the fingerprint scanner, excellent audio, and "HP CoolSense" which changes system performance settings to prevent the laptop from getting scalding hot while sitting on your lap. This can be quickly toggled on and off.

As far as durability, it does have a real aluminum overlay on the screen and keyboard surround, and it has a g-sensor to "lock" the harddrive if it senses it's been dropped so it can prevent harddrive damage.

I've had it for about 6 months now, and it seems to be much more durable than my last Gateway, which requires shorting a wire on the laptop frame to power on.

While I realize you said that, I happened across the following while looking at ultrabooks over the weekend: http://www.velocitymicro.com/wizard.php?iid=236. I'd only known them as a boutique gaming pc builder previously.

Good specs, and it comes with a built-in optical drive. They're currently $150 off too (you have to pick the promo at the bottom); that's a lot of notebook for $750.

I was a huge fan of PC's and finally made the Mac switch. I can't imagine going back. Not trying to do the whole Mac vs. Pc thing but I hunted a long time for a great PC and just couldnt get past the quality of the Macbook Pro. Yes, maybe not as built as some of the PC's you can put together but I love it. I just bought a Lenovo for my office and the computer really impressed me. I would definitely check out the brand.

That looks really good. That's pretty much right in the price point I was considering.

Thanks! Do you know much about the Lenovo lineup? What's equivalent to that Velocity model above?

I use a Mac for video editing and really like it. But the least expensive Macbook Pro is $1200, and configured like the $900 laptop above, it would be $1400. That's kind of a big jump.

used alienware m11x or m14x. solid performers, in your vaguely presented budget range, great build quality and very durable (metal frame!). Besides, who can turn down a laptop with five sets of independently user configurable backlight zones? I've seen your lighting display in the store. You want this in your life.

Follow-up: After browsing the Lenovo web site (thanks for the help, Sharkbait!) I went to Micro Center for some hands-on with the product. I settled on a Core i5 Lenovo G580, which is not fancy but is sturdy and should be plenty powerful for the wife's photo editing and the kid's movie/music needs.

It'll probably play StarCraft2: Heart of the Swarm as well. I mean, in theory.

It has Windows 8, which is hardly an operating system upgrade. More like a skin on top of Windows 7/Vista/XP/NT.

My turn to ask teh all-knowing OT for laptop advice.

I currently have a Toshiba that I bought in 2008 and it's just not cutting it. I process many GBs of photos through Photoshop and download torrents when I travel. Must haves:

- Small dimensions
- Spacious HD
- Lots of RAM
- Fast processor and video
- NO WINDOWS 8

I have PCs at home, but if a Mac will do the job well, then I'm willing to give it a shot.

You know, if you install StartMenu8 on Win8 you essentially have Win7... for free.

Exactly this, but add the step where you format immediately and d/l a bloatware-free image from digitalriver.

When it comes to lappies: Buy cheap, replace as needed.

Great idea. Recommend something that costs 2x or 3x more than what she could get that would more than satisfy her requirements of googling Nikki Minaj and putting together a newsletter in MS word.
