I'll pay for shipping if you get to a point to just get rid of it.

My son wants a laptop. I'm not sure why a 10 year old with every electronic device under the sun also needs a laptop, but it is an easy solution to Christmas. My wife has a Chromebook for work. He thinks it's pretty cool and said he wants one. I've never even looked at her Chromebook so I know nothing about them. I assume they run Android and not Windows.

I know he wants it mostly for playing games, both desktop and web based. I would like something that will be useful in the future for school work as well. So, with a budget of around $300 (better if less), would you recommend a Chromebook or a cheap Windows laptop? Any suggestions on either?

What games? It makes a big difference. If he's expecting to be able to play Battlefield 1 on it, then he will just be disappointed with pretty much any $300 laptop. Best not to even waste the money as it will just sit around.

Any chromebook is going to struggle on more than just browsing or watching cat videos.
Any cheap laptop (~300 if you are lucky and catch a sale) is going to struggle on almost anything (even Minecraft on anything but the lightest of settings) aside from flash games.

If he wants to play games, you need a graphics card, and that means ~$500-600ish.

YMMV

He has a PS4 and Xbox One for gaming. It will mostly be stupid web based Flash games, although Minecraft is also a possibility.

Browser based games are fine in a Chromebook. The modern ones are plenty quick enough for that sort of thing, and Chrome OS has a lot less overhead than Windows so they can do more with less. Also, new Chromebooks can run Android apps so there's a ton of games available. My BiL got that Asus Flipbook hybrid thing and it's pretty sweet, though it's kinda small. My son plays all sorts of Flash based games and makes projects on Scratch using a pretty weak Chromebook at school.

EDIT: Ignore this part below since he's got consoles for games, I posted late
$300 is not much money in Windows land... if you want to play anything more than browser games and small Windows Store stuff you're gonna struggle a bit.

This might handle some more demanding games ok though: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...9SIA5WM2FA1693
Pros: SSD, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU w/ 1GB RAM, oldie-but-goodie i7 CPU
Cons: Win7 not 10, kind of a small-ish SSD, dedicated GPU is still an Intel which is meh

This one has a lesser CPU (i5) and more (but slower) HD storage, but has an Nvidia NVS 5200m GPU which is still not a hardcore "gamer" card but at the relatively low native resolution of this laptop (1366x768) it should handle most games adequately (if not at highest detail settings). And at least the spinner drive is a 7200rpm, so it should perform well enough for a kid.

Her Chromebook was provided by her employer, so that can't happen.

I think I need to ask him what exactly he "needs" a laptop for before I make the decision. If it's just to browse the web and play flash games, then Chromebook. If he plans on playing PC games, then I need to up the budget and rethink it.

He already has a PS4 and XBone. Tell him to go play stickball in the street or something.

Three years with my XPS13 and no desire to upgrade since it's still plenty fast for doing everything from opening 35 tabs in firefox and chrome and running a few virtual machines at a time without ****ting itself. You said no gaming... but still will add that the XPS13, at least this one, will **** itself with games not turned down to the lowest acceptable settings. I've only really ran Cities:Skylines and one other Steam game I can't recall off hand.

The new ones have quad PCI lanes on their thunderbolt ports so you can add a graphics adapter. It's an intriguing option. My only beef with the XPS 13 is that I went through 2 units before Dell delivered a (so far) stable one. Those bad units ran pretty hot. This one, not so much. Knock on wood.

Thankfully the only problem I've ever had with mine was accidentally re-partitioning the hard drive from a live usb load I was testing. I didn't have anything needed saved locally, by chance not foresight

Did you guys buy the XPS13 directly from dell? I don’t see it available on Best Buy website.

I did. It was likely the cheapest when I was ready to buy. I searched Amazon, Newegg and 'google shopping'. If you're cross shopping stores double check exact product numbers and specs to make sure some little thing isn't different affecting the price. There were 4, maybe more, main configurations and then little differences within those that made shopping a little tedious to be sure I was comparing apples to apples.

Call me crazy but I bought the dell ups 13 9360 and also a MacBook to compare which I like more. While I like PC and the computer for the most part, the fan seems to run a lot and its damn loud. Seems to be like its a problem looking online. Have any of you experienced this? It sounds like a damn jet engine about to take off with just opening a webpage.

I do hate how recessed the MacBook keys are on the keyboard. I feel like I have to hit them a little bit harder than the dell

xps13?

The only time my fan really runs are when I'm watching a lot of youtube videos, not noticing I opened a page full of high quality .gifs or it's updating while I'm watching videos.

When the fan kicks on and it's unusual I look at taskmgr to see what's causing high CPU usage and it's generally one of those three things.

I got Mrs. Lag a MacBook and she loves it, never honestly ever used apple products outside of the iPad the company gave me. Seems nice though.

So I think i've isolated the issue with the XPS13 and the jet engine fan. With the laptop plugged in actively using the computer or even just turned on doing nothing, the fans kick in and are loud as ****. With the computer unplugged, the fans do not seem to kick on at all. I'm not sure what causes the fans to kick on when plugged into power.

Going to play with both the macbook and xps13 for a week and see which on I like better.
