I am going to be upgrading to an aftermarket headunit soon. The 7" unit is much nicer than the 6.2", but functionality and sound quality are still sorely lacking.

I recently upgraded the HU on my 2017 WRX Limited with NAV and HK to a after market HU. If you’re interested in my stock 7” screen HU, send me an offer. I don’t know how much they cost really, but if the price is right, I’ll probably sell it.

slightly off topic
Does the 2018 WRX/STI have android auto and apple carplay? Is it possible to transplant that headunit over to the 2017/8 Forester? |

Update:
So some of you may remember that I got an FF667UM unit last year to replace my stock 6.2" unit. Got it for $100 off eBay but unfortunately found out that it the digitizer grid lines are visible on it. Works great otherwise. A couple of months ago I decided to bite the bullet and go aftermarket. I got a Kenwood DMX906S from Crutchfield complete with all the recommended parts from Crutchfield (Maestro RR/SU2 and various other adapters). The screen was awesome, the speakers sounded way louder and deeper, but I disliked a lot of other things about it. Wireless Android Auto was the main reason I got it and it was buggy as hell and didn't work half the time. Granted, that's also an issue with Google and not 100% on Kenwood, but it was still frustrating nonetheless. It also needed to plug into the OBD2 port to get vehicle diagnostics which meant no AccessPort monitoring for me. The FM radio reception was also terrible and nothing I did seemed to fix it. Apparently a lot of other owners have had this issue with aftermarket decks also. Surprisingly, the lack of a volume knob didn't bother me nearly as much as I thought it would. Long story short I ended up returning it and buying yet another 7" OEM headunit. This one was an FF678UM that I got for $170 from eBay. I made sure to look very closely at the pictures this time and surely enough, no digitizer grid lines visible. Popped it in the other day and it looks great! To me, I tried the aftermarket route, but it didn't seem worth the almost $1000 I paid after taxes. I am quite happy with the OEM headunit functionality but will spend the $1000 elsewhere to improve sound. I am thinking a small under-seat sub and an amp. Wireless AA/Carplay is still too new IMO, although the idea is great. I think it will be a few more years until they get the kinks sorted out and hopefully the next generation WRX/STi will have Wireless AA/Carplay standard. On that note, I do have my old FF667UM for sale if someone wants it. Works great aside from some cosmetic imperfections and the grid lines being visible. I also have a spare telematics module that came with the new 678UM unit that I ordered that I have no use for. |

Navi.
A question before I get started on the small project since my current 6.2 hu touch screen has stopped working. Everything works except the touch screen, making it useless. Will I need anything else if I choose to I install the Navi non h/k version in? Will I run into sound issues like the h/k version? I know that I will need the breakout harness and the usb hub.
Thanks.. any help will be helpful. |

Cheap fix is to buy a cig lighter USB charger with a female USB on it. Then buy a 2 male to 1 female "y" connector on amazon or ebay. Plug the one male into the arm rest, plug the other male into the cig charger and plug your phone into the female plug. Get's enough power from charger to provide power to make the phone work with improved radio and it all tucks into the arm rest.

I just did this swap yesterday but the FF667UM is not sitting correctly. When the top two bolts line up, the HVAC portion won't snap in. When the HVAC snaps in, it forces the top two boot holes to move up just enough that I can't get the bolts in.
I got the bolts in and basically forced the lower portion to snap in. Still doesn't look right... Anyone else have this issue? I don't get it. I even transferred the brackets to be 100% sure. |
