I suggested to my friend with a VW GTI that he should install one of those, since his car was breaking down all of the time. Much more convenient for the tow truck operator.

I saw that when I first bought the car. Definitely nice. Another company makes yellow too. But agreed, I can't see spending $240 on two.

Anyone know how much another OEM tow hook is?

Are you planning to keep these installed all the time? And if so, why?

It's not your car, so th basis of understanding is irrelevant.

Just trying to understand the motivation. At least the "dressy" tow hooks fold down, so they don't add so much length to the car, are less likely to put a welt on your shins, and just look more "finished" in general. If you're looking to add rice bling to your car, don't cheap out and put two OEM tow hooks on. Go big or stay home.

Or just save your money and leave well enough alone.

IMHO, which is completely irrelevant. So just do whatever makes you happy.

Aftermarket tow hooks are the modern day equivalent of the old over-sized rear spoilers. It's a trend. At least they has more functionality than the four foot tall spoilers.

As is the term "rice" being overly used to describe anything not to your liking. Tow hooks are useless if you're not using them for their intended purpose. In which they will be. In the winter. At my job. Aiding in removing vehicles from being stuck in a foot of snow.

Excellent. A functional use of the tow hook, not just decorative.

Having said that, do you really need one simultaneously on both ends of the car? Or when you're pulling cars that are stuck, do you generally prefer to tow in either reverse or forwards?

I generally use the rear, but just in case of the event of ME being stuck too, we can then daisy-chain. lol

I have yet to use them but I'm getting a kayak in the next couple of days and wanted two hooks installed front and rear to have tie down points. I see that people will tie them down to something underneath the car resulting in the strap rubbing on the paint on the bumpers. I think a tow hook would minimize the rubbing depending on how long the kayak is.

I also just ordered a set for this same reason.

Also a great use.

Is there not factory tow hook/loops under the car on the chassis anywhere, or just the removable hooks? I know a lot of cars have loops on the chassis under the bumpers..

Haven't really been under this car yet..

If I remember right I did see a small hook or two under front but that would scare me to use for anything other than the kayak idea. I think it's for when they are transported so they can attach under to keep them from rolling.

Ah, makes sense. Probably solely hook points for a flatbed..

Even for kayaks, I'd certainly choose the screw-in hooks. Then, no rubbing on the paint..

I don't think these Imprezas are well suited to routinely extract other vehicles. Subaru explicitly discourages towing anything with them, and vehicle extraction works a drivetrain harder than just pulling a small utility trailer down to Home Depot. Add to that the fact that we don't have much ground clearance or maximum traction tires. I think your transmission is going to hate you if you use the car this way enough to justify permanently mounted tow eyes. I'm looking forward to the videos, though.

It's not like it's constantly for months, but every now and then, a car needs a little assistance. I do appreciate your concern though. haha

So then the permanently mounted tow eyes are mostly a fashion accessory. Check.

Yup, most cars have some sort eye formed into the sheet metal or loop of small steel bar welded on to the unit body structure somewhere to secure them during shipping. These are what I usually hook a strap to with a small shackle when gently extracting them from sand or snow.

The eye bolt on Subarus and Some Volvos make it much easier/more convenient to pull them out of light stucks.

Worst has been a VW Jetta with nothing on the front end to hook to. Had to dig down to the suspension and loop the strap around one of the A arms.

When did I say permanent? I'm putting them on through the winter, and taking them off in the summer. I'm not removing and reinstalling them 4 times a day over winter.

When you pay my car payment, you can decide what will or will not be on my vehicle.

Troll someone else. You won't get far here.

My kayak rack came with straps made to hook to those eyes. I use my rack a couple times a week sometimes for various reasons. So I leave mine screwed in. Kinda like I leave my receiver hitch ball and stinger in all the time on my trucks , so it's there when I use it. I don't think the term "ricer" really fits on a Subaru board. Maybe a honda board, but most all Subaru owners have a different mentality.

Permanent as in left installed for significant amounts of time, as in months. Maybe semi-permanent would be a more appropriate term.

I see that "every now and then" has now turned into 4 times a day, but that isn't very often. Um, okay.

Calm down. No one telling you what you can or can't do with your car. Objective discussion and critical thought are not trolling.

Regardless of your opinion on my tow hooks, they will be mounted on my vehicle throughout the winter. Thanks.
