Thumbs up Oh Canada!

Bienvenue au Grand Prix F1 du Canada !

Hey! Don't forget to post your picks at the F1 Pick 6 (ok... 8) site. Our group name is "impreza.net". William Truett (who are you?) is kicking all of our butts! He won overall at Nurburgring, and is leading our championship! I guess he's currently the Michael Schumacher of the impreza.net Pick 8! Congrats!
  • Here are my picks
  • Michael - Incredible season, best car and tires.
  • Rubens - He is only vulnerable when they choose the wrong strategy, a la Nurburgring.
  • Jenson - The Honda is stepping up their motor... if it doesn't blow, and Michelin provides a good tire, optimally he could run w/the Ferraris.
  • Jarno - The Renault chassis likes high aero circuits, which this is not, but the Renault is reliable, and the team is very focused.
  • Fernando - Jarno's faster currently.
  • Juan - He should finish higher than this, but the Williams brakes are suspect this season.
  • Ralf - He's angry now, if only he would stop driving into people, instead of around them when he passes.
  • Takumo - Drove a fantastic, aggressive race at Nurburgring, at a race pace faster than both Rubens and Jenson... but he is still a little rough, so it's either podium, or few/no points

Edit: spelling errors!

Michael - hopefully a close finish like last year
Jenson - consistantly on podium
Rubens - pit strategy will hurt him
Jarno - will keep the momentum going for him
Juan - will bitch about something post-race
Fernando - won't be as fast as Jarno
Takuma - will have to pit to replace aero-parts
Ralph - will continue to unimpress

Talking For gtguy...

The new F1 hero... Takuma!
Quote:
BAR boss David Richards
There will be a debate about whether it was an over-optimistic manoeuvre and people will have their opinions. But at the end of the day we employ racing drivers and we want them to race right to the last lap. And if there's an opportunity there we have to try.

Taku was a hero -- that's what racing drivers are made of. They're the kind of people we should be applauding.

I think that I just got lucky with some of my later picks for the European GP. Here are my picks for Canada:

1. MS - He won last year with inferior tires, just think what he'll do this year. I imagine he's still a bit pissed about Monaco
2. JT - Fast car, been consistent this year and better than his teammate yet his spot for next near is still 'uncertain' according to Flavio
3. JB - Won't be able to climb to the top spot of the podium for this race, but he'll be pretty competitive
4 FA - Outclassed by JT, but will be a bit behind the top 3
5. RB - Won't have the pace for this race, but will still get some valuable points for the team
6. RS - Hopefully he won't be involved in any indicents in this race
7. JPM - Barely getting in there for a couple of points
8. MW - maybe Webber can polish a turd

I can't wait for the North American races so I can have a F1 party and not have to serve breakfast food! Burgers w/ canadian bacon at my place!

Arrow Parking In Montreal On GP Weekend

Parking can be pretty tight in Montreal during the week of the GP! Only expert parallel parkers need apply...

Then when you do find a spot, the locals can sometimes hang out on your car...

This car belongs to a typical unemployed canadian:

I predict 7 wins out of 8 starts. If MS does win, doesn't that leave him 4 wins short of breaking the record for number of wins in a season (10 I think, but can't be bothered to check) with 9 (?) races left.

Have a Nice Day? The New McLaren MP4-19B & North America

As some of you may know, McLaren rolled out a major revision of this year's car during testing last week. It is known as the MP4-19b. Per Adrian Newey, there is no mechanical changes. One could see some subtle aero tweaks, as the engine cover looks longer, a la Renault, and the side pods had a nice curve that reminds everyone of Ferrari's side pods.

But the real difference appears to be what is not seen. The drivers had been complaining of a lack of confidence on corner entry. For a F1 driver to make that complaint would mean that most likely the chassis is flexing. Supposedly, McLaren has been using a new technique in the lay-up of their chassis, which results in a lighter overall chassis, on the MP4-18, and MP4-19.

Speculation is that McLaren has changed the lay-up (ie; how the carbon fiber chassis is built). This would explain why this new chassis has changed enough that it will have to undergo FIA impact testing again, though is very similar to the current chassis.

Now the bad news for you McLaren fans... Martin Whitmarsh (McLaren F1 CEO) is saying that the chassis apparently works very well, but it won't likely see a race weekend until the French GP, (early July).

That means the flexy flyer MP4-19 for Montreal, and Indy. Montreal can be pretty bad for a car with this problem, as it requires precise corner turn in.

Furthermore, for Canada and Indy, rumor has it that Mercedes has detuned the motor to make it last. Both circuits reward strong motors, and punish weak ones. If you're gonna pick a McLaren to finish in the top 8 at either venue, it is a gamble!

Oh Canada! What a great city. I had the good fortune of attending the Montreal race 9 times since 1993. Killed off many many brain cells with their beer. Also destroyed much of my left ear's hearing watching either Alesi or Berger grind the Ferari V12 up the backstraight and under a bridge.

Anyway, Michael will have a disasterous race and finish only second this week.

1. Rubinho
2. MS
3. Button
4. Trulli
5. Montoya
6. Alonso
7. Sato
8. Ralfie

Due to the lack of activity on this thread, I was beginning to think that nobody cared that much for the Canadian GP.

I hope that the B-spec McLaren is much more of a contender than the current one is. I have to imagine that Mercedes/Ilmor having been burning the midnight oil ever since the start of season in trying to solve their lump's woes. Maybe the new bodywork of the 19B will allow more airflow around the engine to aid in some cooling. Too bad these changes won't be available sooner.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that this year's race will be as entertaining as last year's.

No offense to the McLaren fans out there, BUT....Chassis? Chassis? Who the heck in their right mind would be focusing on a chassis when their engines keep blowing up. Norbert: you'd better REALLY REALLY start thinking about a new job....maybe in mercedes domestic car sales.......................BriDrive

"We will do everything to improve the package," McLaren chief Norbert Haug told the German sports agency SID. "We need to get back the reliability and speed."

Uhhhh....errrr.....well.........that's a bit of an understatement.

Ralfy surprised most folks for grabbing pole, Button is on the front row. Michael surprised by being so far down, (6th, but he says that their tires do not work well over a single lap, but should do well in a race pace).

Check out Takuma's 1st sector time... he's down in 17th position, but his 1st sector was better than all others, then flubbed up turn 6, over in the 2nd sector, and then messed up on the entrance into the last set of chicanes, and spun it over the last turn, but kept it off the wall, and kept the fire lit. Massa had a deflating tire on his out lap.

Here are the qualifying times:
Code:
Pos Driver Team T1 T2 Time
 1. (20) R.Schumacher Williams-BMW (M) 20.386 43.408 1:12.275
 2. (14) Button BAR-Honda (M) 20.245 43.278 1:12.341 + 0.066
 3. (16) Trulli Renault (M) 20.507 44.024 1:13.023 + 0.748
 4. (19) Montoya Williams-BMW (M) 20.500 43.816 1:13.072 + 0.797
 5. (18) Alonso Renault (M) 20.530 44.193 1:13.308 + 1.033
 6. (13) M.Schumacher Ferrari (B) 20.592 44.013 1:13.355 + 1.080
 7. (10) Barrichello Ferrari (B) 20.447 44.329 1:13.562 + 1.287
 8. (12) Raikkonen McLaren-Mercedes (M) 20.666 44.111 1:13.595 + 1.320
 9. (15) Coulthard McLaren-Mercedes (M) 20.736 44.460 1:13.681 + 1.406
10. (5) Klien Jaguar-Cosworth (M) 20.876 44.549 1:14.532 + 2.257
11. (11) Fisichella Sauber-Petronas (B) 21.032 44.985 1:14.674 + 2.399
12. (9) da Matta Toyota (M) 21.087 44.939 1:14.851 + 2.576
13. (8) Panis Toyota (M) 21.029 44.879 1:14.891 + 2.616
14. (6) Webber Jaguar-Cosworth (M) 20.916 44.843 1:15.148 + 2.873
15. (4) Heidfeld Jordan-Ford (B) 21.222 45.320 1:15.321 + 3.046
16. (3) Glock Jordan-Ford (B) 21.627 46.094 1:16.323 + 4.048
17. (17) Sato BAR-Honda (M) 20.136 43.754 1:17.004 + 4.729
18. (2) Baumgartner Minardi-Cosworth (B) 21.824 46.395 1:17.064 + 4.789
19. (1) Bruni Minardi-Cosworth (B) No Time
20. (7) Massa Sauber-Petronas (B) No Time
So one can guess that Williams, Renault, and BAR are 3 stopping, while Ferrari, and Sauber are 2 stopping. With the times that Ralf and Jenson turned, one has to wonder if they are running lighter than most everyone else, and will have to stop 1st.

It will be interesting to see if the Bridgestones hold up, while the Michelin's degrade, then we could have the spectacle of Ferraris passing Michelin runners on track for position, and possibly going to victory from the 3rd and 4th row.

Da Matta said that his Toyota was set up with understeer for the race, to help his back tires last a full stint. That makes me think that most all of the Michelin runners are running a 3 stop, shorter stint strategy, while the bridgestone runners are 2 stopping.

Just rolled in home a few hours ago. It was the best time I have ever had at a track. Unbelieveable and undescribeable the sounds. Spent too much money, walked too much, but Ferrari won, so it made it a little better to bare.

you telling me Ralf got DQ'd and lost his 2nd place? that sucks.

I just finished watching the recorded coverage of the race. you could tell that Reubens was putting on a media face saying "we had a lot of fun out there" but it was also clear that he wished he could have gotten around MS.

Wuebens had him for certain. MS was checking his mirrors so hard it looked like he was watching a friggin tennis match

"Team orders", yet again from Ferrari. In my book Wuebens will go down in history as the most faithful, loyal, abiding team player and gentleman in the history of all sport. Just once, though, I'd love to hear hear call back over the radio, to the chiefs, "...yeah hang back behind him my hiney....I'm going in HARD. He's goin' DOWN".

I'm not sure who is more "scripted" these days, F1 or Nascar.
