Smile Installed fest =)

a big thank you goes out to alex and josh for helping out with my car and randy for hosting this fest. Alex/josh i have a question for u two.. I just checked my car right now.. my rear has about a finger and a half or wheel gap space, and the front has about 2 fingers worth, and the front looks higher than the rear. Is this something wrong with the springs and shocks i have or just the height settings? Oh and it was nice meeting the new sube owners

It is the height settings. The rear should sit a bit lower than the front. The front is higher from the factory, maily so due to the fact that the front has to have room for the wheels to steer the car. You can raise the rear a bit higher, but that can put too much weight up front and cause the car to push. Let your shocks and springs break in a bit more and then maybe start to play with height and such.

If you need anything else or have more questions, let us know.

I didn't want you to have any rubbing problems. That is why we have set your ride height so high. I did a mistake on my car and found out the hard way going from "WAY DAMN TO LOW" to "STILL TOO LOW" to "OK". Drive your car for a while and figure out how low can you go without rubbing.

alex/josh.. Well i took the car around a local empty lot and tried some cornering to see if the tires rub, and it seems my rear rubs during like a 35-40mph turn. and the rattling doesn't seem to be stopping.. also a question about that break in thing on the TEIN's. since i bought them used. (3months usage from previous owner) I was under the impression that it should've been broken in already, or does that break in thing apply to everytime u put the TEIN's in? I was gonna wheel alignment on sunday, but i was figuring if i had to mess with the height settings again i would have to WA again right? So should i get a WA now and be able to mess with the height settings, or get it later after all the height settings have been taking care off? :confused

You should be able to get it aligned by whoever does your corner weighting. I know this sounds repetitive, but get it corner
weighted.

If the struts were on a "subaru" before, you will not have to wait for it to "wear in". They are ready to go and be corner weighted.
Roger Kraus in Castro Valley is the closest place and Josh seemed to think their prices are fair.

yes you will. think about suspension geometry for a sec. When you raise or lower the car, the camber and the toe both change. think of the front susp. compressed. All of a sudden evrything is different. Well, lowering the car is the same thing. The reverse is true if you raise it. As Alex said we kept the height where it is to keep you from rubbing, TOO MUCH. Looking at your tires and where they were in relation to the body, it is pretty obvious you were going to rub. I would look into rolling the fenders to create more clearance. I belive shiv is doing the same thing to accept 50 series tires.

I don't recommend lowering the car much more than we did. Not for the tire clearance, but for handling sake. Our cars do not take well to being really low. I have tried it in many different heights, as well has Alex. It just doesn't work well.

Josh I am thinking of raising the rear a little bit to see if the rubbing would stop, and probably raise the front a little also to compensate for the rears raise, and if that don't work than i'll try getting the fender walls rolled. But you have any idea about the rear left shock making the knocking noise? and this only happens to the rear left. Also on these TEIN's, on the freeway it vibrates and shakes soo much that after i got out the car my back was aching and stuff.. gave me a headache.. Then i put the settings to the softest.. all 16 clicks to the left on the rear and 4 clicks from the left for the fronts and it was like more comfy, but the ride started getting more body rolls and stuff.. So you think its the Pillow mounts? whats ur suggestions? I dont' really care about the height of my car.. i just want good handling without the pains (physical) gonna have to see a chiropactor @ this rate..

Welcome to the wonderful world of coil overs!!!

Making the ride softer will give a bit more bodyroll(which isn't necesarily a bad thing), and give you less headaches. But in all reality, if you find the softest settings too stiff, you might think about getting a softer spring set, or (opinion) trade the Tein's for a prodrive or STi Ver V set up. Going to the stock pillows will eliminate alot of the noise, but will take away the responsiveness of the suspension. You also need a bigger rear bar. That 13mm is useless at this point. A bigger bar and end links will practically eliminate body roll at any speed, and then you can run softer settings.

Do you plan on racing much? What was your primary reason for getting the Teins?

Go ahead and raise the rear a bit, don't worry too much about raising the front. I have my rear slightly higher in the rear.

Josh or Alex

Are the Teins that harsh (as in what Bluesaint is experiencing) or is the aluminum pillow mounts??? I too was thinking of purchasing the Teins for myself, but instead of the aluminum pillows...I was going to go with the STi's or even the stock units. Also there are two types the HA and the HR....is there any difference in these???

I'm looking for the best setup for Street 60%, & Track (be it autoX or true roadracing) 40%. Are the Teins too harsh for anything but pure "Road-Racing" activities...i.e. NO POTHOLES. If so what would be a better setup.....STi Version 5, or the KYB/AGX & Eibach springs setup???

Thanks

Eddy L.

[The following is my opinion based on my experience with the different suspension set ups I have driven and owned.]

EddyRS

I started out with the prodrive susp., and loved it. Then I decided to start racing a bit more, I decided to sell the prodrive and get the GAB coilovers. I was looking for less body roll, and stiffer ride for racing. Well I got it. The coilovers are very stiff, even on the softest settings. My wife still moans when we go over bumps. For the track, this set up is awesome. No roll, lots of control, and flat as a pancake. Just what I wanted. Well, now that I hav had it for a while, I sometimes miss the prodrive. You don't get the adjustablility like you do wiht the GAB's, but in all reality, how often do you plan on changing the height?, and have to get an alignment everytime when you do. Not very cost effective. For the commute I have, the prodrive(KYB/AGX would be a great option, as well as the version V) was ideal. Ungodly handling, with body roll, but kept the wheels on the ground. Same with the Ver. 5. The coilovers skip on uneven surfaces, rock your fillings to death, and my rear wheel comes off the gound everytime I go over a bump diaganally, or go into a steep driveway. Suspension travel is sacraficed for more dampening and a lowered ride.

With the stock pillows in front, the ride got a bit nicer. Less noise, but lost a bit of response. No biggie, at the time all I wanted was less noise and to take away the earth shaking vibrations being transfered( as well as I bent the crap out of my pillow mount thre times, and bend two rims on pot holes w/17" wheels w/ 40series tires.). It felt like my car was coming apart at the seams. The stock pillows aleviated that, and I have not had time to put in the rears.

So after all that, here is my opinion. If you want 60% street 40% track, think about the KYB/AGX set up. Adjustable, and rides great on the street. Proly the ideal street set up(for the Bay). If you don't mind a stiff ride and plan on keeping the 16" rims with 55 series tires, than I recommend the coilovers. I tell ya tho, I do wish I had a more street friendly set up sometimes.

josh

josh my prime reason for getting the TEIN's was because i heard how they are the best out there and the fact that this guy emailed me offering it to me for $1100 with pillow mounts, so i figure its cheap and it'll probably cost me the same if not more for prodrive or brand new sti v5's.. now as for the usage of the car im planning on mainly 80% street and 20% track. And yeah i probbaly careless about the bodyrolls if i set the settings on softest( 16clicks to the left) because im waiting for my Cusco Front strut bars, Cusco rear strut bars, Cusco rear 20mm sway bars. and i just got in that groupbuy for the endlinks. so that should take care of any body rolls from putting my tein's on the softest right? As for the knocking noise i been getting on my rears, u heard it before josh, it sounds like its lose or something, but i double checked and the bolts and nuts are as tight as i can humanly go. If you are going to the sat lan thing @ SF maybe u can give me a good height setting i can get it to.. But as of right now.. Man is my body aching from riding in the highway..

i have the TEIN/AGX set up becuz i do a lot of driving on my RS. at first, i wanted to go w/ the TEIN coilovers but i dont' want to sacrafice the ride comfort. i think i have made a good choice by going for tein s-tech/ agx setup. it only costed me $622 for this package. Now w/ cusco 20mm and cusco front/rear strut bars on the car, the handling is even more responsive! im planning on gettin 18" wheels so i think this set up will also protect my wheels.

try these hieght settings. 340 front, 345mm rear, from the center of the rim to the lip of the fender.
All of the strut tower bars will not eliminate roll, but the 20mm will. Hopefully the strut tower bars will eliminate the ticks and clicks. If I do go this weekend(planning on it) I will for sure check it out.

Drifting thru

plan on rolling your fenders for the 18's. Also, get a REAL strong rim. In the Bay you will chew your rims to death. I have Lumpy 17's right now. 40 series tires just dont cut it, and you will need to run 35(?!?!?) series tires. Good Luck
