FS: VT 2005 Baja turbo, black, 110K miles $13,500/ OBO
PRICE DROP TO $13500 OBO
Hey all... ugh, time to buy something for 5 passengers, something that gets 30+ MPG hwy... I hate to say it but a Saab or Volvo wagon, maybe an SUV (ick!) Heres the details! I bought it at 55K from AutoCreek in vergennes, VT. It had the bug deflector, bed cover (ozz bros??), heated seats, etc... in black... Since I have had it, I have put in: -Kart boy full shifter bushing kit (F+R) -STI intercooler, bpv and samco hoses -royal purple fluids since I got it (wix gold filters), trans, rearend and crankcase -fresh set of Denso Iritium plugs 100 miles ago -samco radiator and anthicilary hoses in blue -bed extender -remote starter -new centrix brakes all around -new timing belt, A/C and alt belts, tensioner and waterpump at 105K -seperate snow rims and tires -oe wheels with a WRB lip, sumitomo HTR+ tires, one is weirdly worn (RR), the other three are 6/32 -factory boost gauge -freshly cleaned K&N filter when the plugs were put in -de-snorkussed-ed-ed-ed-ified -new RF ball joint in june (found during inspection) The good: -very good paint with very few blemishes, one above the DS headlight, a scuff on the pass side rear bumper, door ding on the pass front door -washed every week and detailed by my recon guy at my dealership -all-weather subaru mats -interior near mint, always microfiber wiped down -the car looks near new, no squeeks, leaks, or clunks, suspension is near new, no leaks -a/c cold -no check engine lights -OEM intercooler, and two front knuckles with new bearings included with sale -cobb heatsheild (uninstalled) for free -OEM heated mirror switch and pass side heated mirror, I have not been able to find a DS used one yet for under $150 from a yard in painted black the BAD: -um... the dents and scuffs listed above -cruise doesnt work, light does, but the wheel lever doesnt work -slight hesitation that I think is the front O2 sensor like this thread says: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1830299 -I think the IC rubber bellows is rubbing the STI TMIC as it makes a noise at idle that goes away when driving and when I open the hood.... I have not tried driving with the hood open.. -DS heated seat does not work on high, they are aftermarket, and I have not had them diagnosed -the drivers seat is cracked on the leg bolster thats about it... heres the pics! interior pics to come [email protected]

well, cause, we just had a tenant move out, and we are in the middle of a remodel of the house and funds are drying up.
We could use the money from the car payment per month to subsidize the project. that and with our traveling (VT nothing is close) we need something with more MPG, and the 2.5GT or the outback wont do above 30MPG... |

Definitely none that are AWD. Hell, can you even find an SUV that gets that? Again, not with AWD. The new Outback is pretty close. |

Well, something you should keep in mind is that with all the additional safety equippment cars are generally a lot heavier than they were a decade or more ago. Also E-10 has taken a chunk out of mileage.
If you can sacrifice the AWD you'll get closer but look - the RATINGS are more like 28 or 29 on the highway for most SAAB wagons these days, AWD drops it to 25/27. http://www.saabusa.com/saabjsp/935/features/specs.jsp Similar story with the Volvos, though they do claim 31 mpg highway on the V50 (though it drops to 20 around town), and of course, if you talk AWD that drops again (19-20 city / 26-27 highway). And the other Volvo models just get worse, especially the larger AWD which can get as low as 22 mpg on the highway. http://www.volvocars.com/us/models/v.../techSpec.aspx I'm just mentioning all this cause it's on my mind these days with the wife talking about going from a Mini Cooper S to an X3 or new Outback. Even with the X3s relatively horrible mileage (16/23) vs (22/29 on the Outback) if she can buy it (CPO) for 2500 less than the Outback, then over the life of the loan the mpg difference will be a wash financially speaking. Just something to consider. |

Highway mpg has nothing to do with weight as it has more to do with gearing, rolling resistance and aerodynamics.
weight affects city mpg. I was turning 1800rpm at 70 in the viggen, I am turning 3200 in the baja... |

Doesn't mean anything as an isolated factor, what are the respective displacements of those motors? Was either normally aspirated? Did they both run in premium or did one run on regular? etc. My point is there are trade-offs. IF you're abadoning AWD, then sure you're gonna pick up some MPG based on frictional differences (likely differences in weight too). But don't assume you're going to hit 37 mpg. And you MIGHT want to do a cost-benefit analysis on fuel costs vs. a new vehicle cost to see where you're really winding up. That's all, just a friendly reminder that it's not black and white. Best of luck with whatever you decide. |

I understand there are tradeoffs. I am looking at used vehicles, not new. |

ONLY if all orther factors are equal - motor capacity (including levels of boost at those rpms), valve sizes, mapping, ambients, aerodynamics and load (including weight) are all equal.
Otherwise results can/will vary. Like I said, best of luck hope you find whatever you want. |

Seriously? You're arguing with someone who's trying to sell a vehicle in order to make his budget work? He knows what mpg he gets with his vehicle, and he knows what his payments are. He want no payments and better mpg.

I thought we were discussing the plusses and minuses of certain vehicles and what helps/hurts mpg ratings? |
