At idle the O2 should bounce between .1 and .9v back and forth. In a 3rd gear pull expect somewhere between a .6 to .8v reading usually. Narrow-band O2 sensors aren't the most accurate of devices!

You need an EGT gauge and a wideband (5V) O2 sensor/gauge to do any real tuning. You can use your stock sensor as a guide but it will not be acurate. When the car enters open loop it ignores the O2 sensor anyway.

Best advice I have for you is to take is slow. start leaning out the mixture slowly and listen for detonation. When you have your EGT you can get more aggressive, till then take it slow.

Ok, my safc is installed, under the Hot-Wire senor correct? now for the sensor check for the in-1 what should i be looking for? what shoudl the voltage be coming for the 02? i know peopel have safc's on their subarus.... what #'s do you all try to get when tunning your safc.. i know it wont help out much but when i get teh egt and the af gauge.... i can know what to look for....so anyone? if you all are not tunning your car then teh safc is pointless to have, its just for looks...... so let me know, thanks

You have to make sure you use your REAR O2 sensor. you can;t use the front one on the S-AFC at all.
And if you do use the rear O2 seonsor, that won;t be accurate either because the exhaust has been catalyzed by then and the O2 is to far away to give accurate readings. In short, the O2 function on the S-AFC is pretty much useless. |

i read that, its for dsm's but i got a jist on tunning... now the Net for the safc on my car should be at 0% because right now its reading 10% for 1 and 2 plus that thread talks about timing, so a itc would be needed? and it says how the egt and af gauge is pointless.... is this true or just not for na cars or what? thanks BOY and everyone.... would should do soemthign similar to what that thread consists of but for a na 2.5 engine motor tunning the safc! ha |

A/F gauges are a tool, not a very good one, but a tool nonetheless. Our engines are very sensitive to knock, or rather, our pistons are very sensitive to knock. If you can hear knock it may be too late. I got lucky this past weekend, I've had some minor knock issues (barely audible) but it was very warm this weekend and I got KNOCK, very loud, very scary. My timing was keeping EGTs in check but I was just running too lean for the temp conditions. Problem solved and, thankfully, no damage.

Go here: Road Race Engineering This site will have all the answers you are looking for. I used it when tuning my car. It's mainly geared for a turbo setup but it'll help you greatly and increase your understanding on EXACTLY how to tune with your SAFC. Others I'm sure will feel differently but it worked great for me. Tell us if the site helped you at all. Good luck! BTW: I tuned with an Apexi SAFC, Jumptronix A/F ratio meter, and VDO EGT gauge.
