How To: Install AeroCatch Hood Pins 08 WRX
Here's a quick how to so you guys know what you're getting into when buying Aerocatch hood pins.
First the things you will need: 1. Router / Dremel with a few drill style cutting bits. 2. Tape preferably masking or frog tape. 3. Drill with a long skinny bit. 4. Aerocatch latches 5. Bondoglass 6. Sand Paper 7. Primer paint 8. A sunny afternoon or a shop. Okay so diving right in, first you need to select a place for the hood pins. Aerocatch pins require a fairly large somewhat flat section to be able to mount them. You can mount them forward or backwards, they will work either way. On the 2008 WRX the stock hood stoppers are in the perfect location. Start by removing the hood stoppers and drilling the centers out. If you do it with a small enough bit, you can actually thread the new pins through the stoppers which makes for easy adjustment later. Once you screw the pins back into the framework it'll look like this. Put a dab of grease on top of the pin and gently close the hood until it hits the pin. Drill a small hole where the grease spot is, trying to make it vertical. Next let the hood rest on the pin and make a mental note of which way the hole needs to be honed out. Use the dremel when adjusting the hole. It doesn't need to be perfect. From here you need to line up the templates that come with the latches. This is a good time to set them up on each side to make sure they'll be even. Now that the templates are taped on and nice and straight, take a deep breath and grab the dremel tool. I suggest starting at the hole drilled for the hood pin and slowly moving outward cutting about 1/8th inch from the inside of the template. when done it should look like this: It will take some trimming and sanding and possibly cutting out on the underside of the hood, but eventually the latches will slide in. Make sure it's not too tight of a fit because the carbon fiber doesn't like to let go should you need to remove them. When you drop them in they should be pretty flat. Like this: If it's not 100% flat don't worry, notice the six little screws that go around the outside, this is where the fun starts. They have nuts that need to go on the back of them. The best way I found to do this is by drilling massive holes through the fiberglass frame and then using a socket and extension glued together. Then take some gum or other adhesive and stick it in the socket until its' almost flush. Then press the nut into the socket, the gum will make sure it doesn't fall out. Carefully start threading it onto the bolt heads. Use an alan wrench to tighten them on the other side. DO NOT remove the socket and extension until it is nice and tight. This part was the biggest PITA so try to stay cool. When you're done the bottom of your hood will look like swiss cheese. This is where the bondoglass comes in handy. Mix up a bunch of it and smear it all into those nasty holes. Take a break and go grab your sand paper. And the other side: NOTE: Make sure you don't fiberglass over the hoodpin holes. I know it sounds dumb but it almost happened. After a few applications and sanding and smoothing out, tape off the area and prime it. If you are a perfectionist, go find some black semigloss and squirt that on there once the primer dries. Here's how it should look if you did it right.

On a lot of the carbon fiber hoods out there, you need to put the pins further out to make it line up with the fenders. On mine, the left side is a little higher than the right side...

I picked that location because it was exactly where the bump stops hit on the hood. I just drilled out the bump stops, threaded the pin through them and put a nut on the back side, reinstalled the bump stops with the pins. It allows you to get the hood down nice and tight so the nothing rattles (important when you have nearly 2000 watts of stereo). That was the easiest part of the install. I also picked the mounting direction based off how flat the surface area on the hood was.

^^ exactly. You picked a place that could control the hood completely instead of just holding it down. You did it right Jebus.

You didn't have to drill holes in the bottom of the hood...I used these -

I am really looking into these, and the spacer things are a must.
I am overly nervous about cutting into my hood though btw my car is a 2001 impreza rs What i would do, which i dont think was specified here, is add the locking black version of these in addition to the stock hood lock asembly Only part im really nervous about is the cutting of the hood |
