Stripped bolt on WRX wagon spoiler
I have a Bugeye wagon, and one of the 2 bolts that holds on the roof spoiler just spins. The spoiler's been a little loose since I got it ~6 weeks ago, and rattles when you shut the hatch, so I set about fixing it a bit ago.
I can feel the "nut" by pulling off the wiring grommet inside the hatch, but can't get a pair of pliers in there to grab it and remove the nut and replace it. Do I have to take the hatch off? Is there a fix I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

Nothing? Well, if I figure it out, I'll post up my version of the fix (which according to my Mrs, will be the longest, most complicated way possible )

Any solution here? I took my spoiler off to dip it... And now the bolts won't tighten... Or come out... Pretty frustrated.

Came across this thread as I was looking for a solution to the same issue, here's how I solved it.
I was suffering from a loose bolt that was causing the spoiler to rattle while driving and when opening/closing the hatch. I'd try to tighten up the right side bolt and it would just spin and spin. Well, I discovered the right side nut had broken free from the hatch: Left side with nut still in tact: Used a punch down thru the hole where nut is stripped to align the mounting point, drilled a hole thru the hatch and inserted a bolt long enough to catch the spoiler on the top. Since this spot sit right at the rubber seal, I used a panhead bolt and attached the nut on top in the spoiler. Also had to use a combination of washers to seal properly. No photos of the punch/drilling but you can see where the bolt lines up inside and on the spoiler. Hope this helps. I'm guessing that many others have the same issue and if anyone has come up with a better fix to repair the broken mounting nut that was welded to the hatch I'd love to hear about it. Spoiler is now attached firmly and has zero vibration at all. I've opened/closed the hatch firmly numerous times and no rattling yet. Will report back if anything changes. |

would toggle bolt work? I used it to fix my spoiler on a 2004 WRX sedan.
Push the bolt through the hatch and then into the spoiler, and then tighten. Assuming it is connected the same as my spoiler to my trunk. Someone chime in if this will work - I just don't know the hatch version very well. |

Just discovered my right side is free spinning too, I need to remove it for my upcoming respray. I'm thinking of drilling from the inside of the hatch where the pan head bolt mod above goes and lightly tapping at till just pops out.

Stripped bolt on WRX wagon spoiler
If the bolt is spinning then the weld nut is already broken free. Remove the other bolt and the spoiler will come off, pull away flat towards the rear and it will pop off the tabs. Keep the hatch closed while removing spoiler.
Use some locking pliers to remove the nut. |

Excellent!
Update on the fix above: Been 2 months of daily use opening/closing and still no rattling at all whatsoever. Haven't touched the bolt/nut at all and it's still as solid as when it was installed. Probably the best improvement I've made for the car! |

My problem was identical to yours. Took her out on the bridge across the Bay at speeds that i will not disclose during high wind warnings and it held together well. Thanks again***128513;

I think the passenger side one on my car is spinning freely also. The previous owner used some sort of caulk looking stuff to hold it on SMH. hopefully I can take off the caulk and fix it the right way

Was scrolling thru my subed threads and saw this one, thought I'd bump with update that I still haven't touched the bolt and have ZERO rattle/noise when opening/closing/driving.
if you have the means, I highly recommend this fix. |

First of all can we talk about the weirdos that first responded to this thread? Secondly it's a wagon not a hatch. How can one be sorry but not have any sympathy? SMH
Anyway... Quote:
So yeah I think a PEM is what was originally welded to the trunk lid. It's clearly a bad design because the metal is thin and this seems like a fairly common failure. It's been a little while since I fixed mine. But i remember it was a PITA to get out because the weld nut was still tightly secured to the bolt when the weld (or maybe it is just a riv nut?) gave out. I think magically an impact got it out and i was able to re use the old nut. I think I used JB metal weld or something similar and secured it back in place. The fix seems fairly strong and has held up over the years. If you don't have the factory nut I would measure the hole and either get a rivnut, or go to PEM engineering (or equivalent) and get a pressfit nut and add some kind of adhesive that bonds to metal. |
