OK, just took a drive with my girlfriend so I could find out exactly where my rear-window (the very back one, technically called a "back-light") rattle/tapping is coming from and hopefully describe it in detail.
I'm almost 100% positive that it's coming from the joint where the back window meets the roof under the headliner. When I pull the headliner down the sound definitely gets louder. It may also be coming from the side and bottom rear-window joints, but I can't get my head close enough to those areas to be certain...lol. The best way I can describe the sound is like several girls tapping their fingernails on a desk, but really fast, so fast in fact, that it almost sounds like a scraping sound at times. The sound is quite brite, and certainly suggests that the joints holding the rear-window in are compromised. Has anyone fixed this one? |

my VIN tag rattles! at first I thought it was the driver defrost vent but oh no my VIN tag rattles too! I guess it's a little loose like the rivets didn't get tight enough. so just picture me going down the road one hand on the wheel and the other on my VIN tag. ha ha
p.s. those two are my only rattles though so I feel lucky compared to some of you |

I am going to check the seat bolts but I am almost postive the noise is coming from head level, behind that panel. My first impression when I heard the noise was that the rear window was shifting in the rubber trim. If I can't fix the prob by this week, I'm going to the dealer (or car window comp.) and asking how much to pull my rear window out, and reseat it with some thicker/different trim. Sound is described as above, fingernail on window noise worsened by temperature drops. If I drive on a smooth road it won't do it, until I swurve back and forth (like an F1 tire warm up move). My car is 11 months old with 30K miles and I noticed this about 5-8K ago. wouldn't think it would be my struts/shocks. Again, I will check the backseat bolts and post back, but I'm 92% sure thats not it. |

I'm soooooo happy I'm not alone. Honestly, if I could get this one rattle/tap fixed I'd be happy, no need to chase down the rest. Keep us posted on what the dealer says DJ.

Not really a rattle, but a creak. I used to have a creak coming from the back everytime the car would transfer weight (left to right, right to left) when cornering. Lots of threads on this issue, but my problem had nothing to do with the suspension. It was the two vertical brackets behind the rear seat, on either side of the armrest. I was surprised to see that they had somehow loosened themselves over the period of time, once I torqued those the creak was gone. As far as I know, this only applies to sedans, unless wagons have these brackets as well?

My back window got quiet with the warmer weather, so hopefully I'll only have to put up with it during the colder months. Unfortunately, I just developed the VIN plate rattle. Frikin' grrrrrrr.

Engine Bay rattle
Seems that when I am in a high gear and start to engine brake, I get a rattle directly behind the center dash.
I am hoping it is a loose pitchmount or engine mount...heck...it could be the tranny mounts possibly. +1 for one of the best threads put together. Great job! |

the dealer fixed it for me and they said it was from a lining between the speaker and the door card getting unattached and resting on the speaker, therefore when the speaker moves from bass the door panel rattles. I had the towels too haha. |

I have an add for ya. How about the linkage rattle that I get when in gear. It sucks. I also have a clutch squeek from under the dash that was solved by some lube on the plunger above the pedal. $.02

I also have the infamous vin plate area rattle. Unfortunately, the normal silicone fix, which works for most, does not work for my case. 04 STI. I basically tried everything I can think of.
1. silconed the clips 2. Lined vin plate and area underneath with dynamat 3. Lined contact with thin weather strip 4. One day I got so irritated, I even chopped off the left most white clip from the vin plate, lol. The rattle only appears on the driver side. It's gone when pressure is applied on vin plate or when vin plate is pulled up. Your input is greatly appreaciated. |

Maybe put a small metal shim under the VIN plate?
