Default Bought 2 2011 Subarus in 7 days... feeling self-conscious around neighbors

Hey everyone, just wanted to see if anyone can relate.

My wife and I work around 90 miles from eachother and we live in the middle so we both have about a 90 mile commute. Mine is slightly longer, her slightly shorter.

She had a 2006 Mazda 3 with 108k and I had a 2007 FJ Cruiser with 99k. (We drive A LOT, I know). I got sick of the FJ and the gas mileage and I never really liked it anyways so I decided to get another WRX which I got the weekend before last. While we were there we were checking out the Forester and this passed weekend decided to trade in her Mazda for a new Forester.

Used car values just spiked and we got good trade-in deals and around $500 under invoice on each car, not to mention 1.9% financing. (We had 7% and 9% on our other cars with 16 and 7 months to go, respectively). Now my wife and I are feeling self-conscious as we live in a predominantly blue-collar, older neighborhood (we're 30 and professionals) in a small town and we feel like everyone is staring at us now.

I know, boo-hoo, you have 2 brand new Subarus Too sensitive? Anyone else have similar stories?

^awesome...

I find that the difference between highway miles and street/city driving is pretty substantial...

Also, old ppl think only hippies drive subarus...that's probably why they are staring...get a haircut!

I get 14 in the town where I go to college because there's a light or stopsign at every intersection and no speed limits over 45. When I go back home I get 24 highway and 20 daily (city/highway).

"There goes the neighborhood."

Saying it was a "good" financial decision is arguable. Generally, when you buy cars, the best financial decision is to drive them until they die. Spending a few years without payments saves you a great deal of money rather than taking on new payments, even lesser ones. But I see your perspective and if you wish to get new cars, have at it.

To that end, when we bought our house in 07, I was a little worried everyone would think we were poor because of my 94 (wife's car 02). Amazingly, the week after we moved into the new house, the 94 started to die. We had planned for that, and we immediately went out and got my 08 Impreza. A couple neighbors said something about it, must have been thinking we were made of money. I just said, not at all, but we had planned to get one anyway before we bought the house.

Two years later, my wife totaled her car and we got a '10 Forester. I didn't worry about it. They all saw her smoking car with a crused front sitting outside.

I think people might be looking at you (if they even are) just because for most people, times are tough. Most people aren't spending money if they have it, and a lot don't have it to spend. Seeing someone replace two fairly new cars with two brand new cars, gets attention. They don't look in your windows and see the mileage on your cars.

So just relax. Enjoy it.

There probably just checking out your rides. I have a new 2011 SWP WRX and everyone stares at my car(that might be because I have the only one around here) but never the less they have alarms and are under warranty, I don't see anything to worry about.

I'm not worried they will be damaged. I guess I'm just worried they think we're excessively wealthy or they're jealous or they think we spend our money stupidly.

This is much more likely.

Excessively wealthy for buying 2 subarus? I am literally laughing out loud here.

Reality. Go find it. I love Subarus as much as the next guy but they are lower level economy cars. No one thinks you are excessively wealthy.

They are Subarus not Ferraris, plus who cares what neighbors think

Either way, if what you say is true, your neightbors need to get over their jealous and it is your money.

Also, I would think you'd get a lot more stares in the FJ Cruiser than the WRX. Hopefully you don't get too sensitive when I tell you that I find them to be pretty ugly.

I couldn't have hoped for better so far. My favorite thing about it was from the moment I started it and heard the exhaust note (kinda loud in the hatch), to the moment I first killed it backing up at the dealer on the test drive... I knew I was back at home.

Compared to my stage 2 '02, sitting behind the wheel and driving it feels about the same except it doesn't spool as fast (not catless obv) and IT GOES INTO FIRST GEAR WHEN IT SHOULD. Only time will tell if the transmission is truly fixed but so far I am a fan. It also handles quite a bit better than a stock '02 (not to mention the better tires), similarly to how it handled with a STI V7 suspension. The styling is by far the best I have seen since the GC8 style Impreza. It was the first WRX that didn't have to "grow on me".

So far the only gripe I really have is there isn't enough storage space for my liking but it's easy to get over it. I guess you don't need a bunch of stuff flying around the car when you're hitting the twistys anyways...

I wouldn't worry about it. Not any of their business how you spend your money.
Besides, you got a good deal on 2 cars, good trade in value and a lower rate, if YOU can afford the cars, that should be your only concern.

Both our payments that we've been making for 3-4 years went down.
