Default 09 2.5i to 2.5GT swap.

So I now have a the option of getting the engine and turbo out of a 09 Impreza 2.5GT. I have a Impreza 2.5i. The GT's motor would give quite a hp/tq boost over my current n/a motor. My question is how hard would it be to swap the turbo'd GT motor in? I know Ill need a an all new exaust, intake, and computer(if not a reflash on the computer). But, the what Im really unsure on is the wiring harness and the drive train?

Ive done motor pulls and swaps before on Chevys and Ford fox Mustangs, but never a Subaru. Any input would be appreciated.

Sell the 2.5i, buy a 2.5gt. You will save money.

[Warning: Doing this swap (without having the Subaru dealer do the swap for you) WILL void any warranty you may have on your Subaru. If this does not deter you, then by all means, read on.]

Well now wait. How much are we talking for this engine? What kind of transmission are you currently using? These are all things we must consider here. If he's got a 5 speed, then it most certainly would NOT be worth the money selling his 2.5i and buying a 2.5GT. Remember, the '09 2.5GT doesn't have a manual transmission. Heck, if he had a 5mt, then he would actually be making his car closer to a WRX than a 2.5GT. I would say do your homework (primarily math in this case), and figure out if it's financially viable to do so. Check out used sources for exhaust parts and whatnot. Make sure the engine from the 2.5GT comes with an ECU first, though. Sites I recommend for sourcing parts include our very own NASIOC's classifieds section, eBay, craigslist, subaruparts.com, etc.

Something that may make such a swap worthwhile: Insurance. If the VIN number on the car says it's a 2.5i, then it's a 2.5i. The only reason I can think of for the insurance company to ask why you have a turbocharged engine in there is if you've crashed, and at that point you can just show them the Subaru dealership receipt and say that your old engine died/seized for some strange reason and you opted for them to put an engine with a bit more oomph in it. Problem solved.

My 2 cents,
~ Scott

2.5i is automatic, sell and buy 2.5GT.
2.5i is 5spd, sell and buy WRX.

Seriously, what you spend switching cars will be less than what you spend swapping, and you'll still have a warranty. Not to mention the fact that the 2.5i has inferior brakes and suspension to either the GT or the WRX.

Not worth it.

Well, he was going to sell the motor/turbo/computer/harness to me for $350 even. He ended up selling the whole wrecked car for $2000 to a guy local doing a 2.0 to 2.5 conversion(or something of the sort).

I could have bought the setup off him for cheap and resold for more, but friends dont do each other that way.
