He's right though. It's not about whether it will work - it's whether it will work well, and last. The audio gurus he mentions would tell you all about infinite baffle..

The punch series woofers aren't an IB woofer - in fact these 8's are the opposite - they are intended for extremely small enclosures (0.23 cu/ft sealed, according to their spec sheet) - the main reason for this being their limited free-air suspension/ excusrion (an IB sub will have a heftier surround which supports the weight and motion, while non IB suited subs actually use the compression stroke to help re-center themselves, for fast action/ accuracy.

Now, with all of that said - these are 8" subs, so they are going to rebound pretty quick anyways. They likely sound good in a vehicle application, and give the guy better low-end than he previously had.. and cost him nothing since he had the subs. (a vehicle is far from an audiophile's dream environment - especially the noisy wrx) Anyways - The only thing i'd watch out for is pre-mature surround wear in an IB application. Alternatively, you can add 2x small sealed enclosures on the back of your baffle board there, - 1/2" mdf, 10x10x6 (od) will get you spot on to the requirements... see how they sound then... you can always remove it.

Has anyone constructed a short ram intake box from scratch? Was looking into making a custom plexiglass one in the near future.

I understand what you are saying, and I completely agree. I kinda thought it was assumed that he made an mdf box for the underside. I was merely arguing that the location would be perfect, as long as you included the boxes on the underside. Good explanation though!

Making Boxes on the underside will be impossible without cutting out most the metal structure under the window. Plus, that would defeat the point of me putting the subs there in the first place, trunk space. I wasn't about to do that if it worked the way it is.. which it does..

hence my last paragraph.. if they work, they work.. and you had them on hand. If running them infinite baffle makes them tear at the surrounds over time - you can explore some IB subs at that point.

I made one with AREA1320 back in 06 when I did my swap. Image Shack lost a bunch of the pics so this is all I have to show. It took a larger drop in type K&N filter on an angle. Being the first one we did it had some flaws that were only obvious on the dyno. When under full boost the 1/8" plexy would get drawn down/flex under vacuum almost 1/4"

That's what I was thinking. I don't have any experience with them though. How do they sound?

like any other sub, they can sound different depending on set up... they generally need more power to produce proper punch, - the mid bass region an 8" loves, compared to a vented or sealed setup - but in return provide much greater low frequency response. an 8" ib will roll off the lower frequencies much more smoothly.. With enough power - they move air like a vented unit, but aren't peaky like one - having a very smooth frequency roll off, like a sealed sub... hard to explain without listening side by side... Compared to the fosgates, you'll likely have to feed them more power to get the same mid-bass feel, but you'll gain a lot of low and very low frequency with a smooth transition between octaves... 8" is a tough choice for open air though - not a lot of variety compared to say..10"+

Not too good lol. I mean they'll give you a little low end but you're better off getting a 10 or 12 and finding a small box that won't take up too much space

Thanks man. I have a tear in my steering wheel, its way more annoying than I ever thought it would be!
I have been thinking about pulling off the torn leather and suede flocking the steering wheel.
I know it will wear off eventually, but for a short term fix until I feel like spending the money on a new/used one.

Here's my current custom DIY modifications on my 07 WRX wagon.. Alcantara wrapped upper dash & upper door panels, 05 Impreza door inserts, Subigal 52mm pod modified to fit 60mm gauge then wrapped to match dash, and last but not least a painted DAMD wheel covers and wrapped Pioneer deck to remove the logo's on it for a more OEM fit.

Combine that with an older DIY mod of installing EvoX seats with a 05 Impreza rear seat covers.

If that box is not sealed, I hope you used a free air sub. Otherwise you'll be blowing those very shortly.
