Default Intermittent Clutch Release Groan Advice - 2013 WRX

What it looks, sounds, and acts like -

TLDR; reasonable chance it's the clutch and replacing it would make it go away, even if the tech can't reproduce?

2013 WRX
Stock
64,000 miles all city traffic, very stop and go

Having an intermittent issue with my clutch (I think?) when releasing it. If I can really feather the clutch and get going slowly, it never seems to happen. If I need to get moving quickly like I'm crossing traffic, or under high load like an incline, it is much less difficult to reproduce. It sounds like a groan - like moving a heavy metal desk across a hard floor. I think I feel a slight shutter or vibration in the clutch when it's happening. I think it's only ever happened in first gear.

The video I was able to find of a Civic that has the same issue, and in typical internet fashion the OP doesn't list what they did to fix it. Lots of anecdotes about people saying it was a spring in the clutch disk of their car or a bad throw out bearing.

The car is going into a local Subaru specialist on Monday, but I'm worried we might not be able to reproduce it during the tech drive. I'm prepared to replace everything in the bell housing - flywheel, pressure plate and disk, throw out bearing and fork. I'm really sick of the noise.

Anyone experienced this before? Do I have a reasonable chance of fixing it if I ask the shop to replace the clutch even if we can't make it happen Monday morning?

Is it the firewall welds creaking from failing?

Negative. Shop looked at that. Thanks for commenting!

Had the clutch replaced Friday. For anyone searching this post because they are experiencing something similar - the throw out bearing was toast. Dust cover was gone and you could see the bearings, so I'm sure any lubricant that was present was long gone. I don't think I was too far from it failing catastrophically. Clutch disk had ~50% material left, the flywheel wasn't glazed or hot spotted and the pressure plate looked OK. Snout of the transmission was still good. The ToB was chirping a little bit, and the intermittent groan noise were the only symptoms.

Replaced everything in the bell housing while they were in there, because I'd hate to have to go back in. Rear main seal, clutch fork, and everything in between. Stepped up to the ACT HD clutch and Streetlight flywheel as the car will start seeing mods now that it's paid off. If you're on the fence, the flywheel is a great upgrade and the clutch feels fantastic.
