New knob project
Some of you may remember the shifter knobs I made for classic Porsche cars.
Well, I'm designing something new now that would be a direct spin on for the WRX/BRZ etc. At the moment it's just for my own amusement, but if they turn out awesome... Anyway, for anyone else interested in making one for themselves, here are the initial drawings and measurements based on the knob from my car. This will allow the stock reverse lockout lifter like the stock knob. The material I'm using is Dymondwood. It's a resin impregnated plywood and is way interesting material.

This is my drawing for the knob. The 22mm recess for the reverse lifter is also a 7/8 drill bit. Pretty easy. I'll make the threaded part out of delrin. To attach the knob to the lathe I'm going to cut the hex end off a m12x1.25 bolt and put that in the jaws of my lathe. Easy. Zach |

A finely crafted wooden shifter knob for a ****ty Japanese econobox. I can just smell the demand. People with mattjk touchscreens are already lining up.

My silent partner and I have agreed on the purchase of 10,000 units of this fine knob. Please let me know at your earliest convenience how many teenage cousins you'll have to trade.

So, anyway...
Used scrap I had around the shop to make the block. At this point I have no idea how it will look, but this is a proof of concept so... onward! Found roughly where the center was, then center punched closer to where center was and scribed a circle. Cut it out on the bandsaw. Turned and threaded the insert out of a piece of Delrin. The recess is for the revers lockout slider. Cut the head off a m12 1.25 bolt. Note the perfect cut here. This will be the mount to attach the knob to the lathe. Epoxied the insert in the knob. Mounted it to the lathe. The wood block at the end is just to stabilize it. Its not glued to the block. Turned and polished. And installed. Not bad for some scrap I had laying around the shop. Would have been nicer in with red accents instead of the brown, but that would have required, you know, buying something. And a very short and probably grainy vid of operation. https://www.flickr.com/photos/vacca_rabite/14337477683 So, not bad for an evenings shop time. It works so I might make a nicer one for the car.
