Default exhaust leak or something else

hey ive been hearing a noise from my car and i think its an exhaust leak. Im not sure whether to look pre or post turbo. I hear it mostly at very low rpm and when cruising where the engine doesnt over power the sound. The sound is relitively quiet but the best way i can describe it sounds kind of a sprinkler kind of a tick tick tick tick. Ive been wondering if it could just be the "boxer tick" but i dont no. It seems a little too loud for something like that. obviously the ticks speed up as engine speed rises and i can hear it much more clearly with the windows down when im driving like next to a curb or median where the sound bounces off. Im hitting target boost or just a hair below. The car has the sti tbe and some of the joints look pretty rusty. Its also lowered so i havent tried soappy water cuz i havent gotten around to lifting it and trying but im wondering if this sounds like a possible leak and wether to look pre or post turbo. I thought i would post because my sound seems different than the banshee or crappy sounding v8 ive read about in other peoples posts

if it was pre turbo you would notice a performance difference, get a spray bottle with soapy water and start the car and start to spray it, make sure the car is cool. and you can just feel around with your hand and see if air is escaping anywhere too

Kmo,
Did you ever figure this out? I JUST bought an 02 WRX, and have the same deal. I don't know if it's normal for the boxer engine, or if I need to locate and fix it. Sounds like a ticky injector, or the "pft, pft, pft" from an exhaust leak. Mine sounds to be coming a bit more from the drivers side.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Ted

That ticking noise is probably an engine valve opening/closing. Sometimes they stick. I'm no expert so I'm not sure if it makes a performance difference.

if its ticking its fine.... if its "pft, pft, pft" then its an exhaust leak.
