Default Exhaust Leak or something else?

We have an 04 wrx that had up pipe installed about 6months ago. Copper gaskets were used. Bolts were tightened about a month ago when exhaust leaks began to present themselves.

It is my fiancee's car and she has been complaing about the leak getting worse. I was working on my car today and took hers for a drive. I got about 50 meters down the road and turned around. Its bad.

Symptoms:
Obvious loud exhaust leak coming from up pipe area.
Extreme loss of power and driveability.
-It feels very slow compared to my car. Both are Cobb stage 2. Hers is a 4EAT but has never felt this slow.
-Boost seems ok, minus the leak, but the actual engine seems slow. Feels very slow out of boost. (Slower than it usually is, I know the Auto hurts this)
I heard a metal on metal sound (i think it was heat sheild, which was un bolted, I removed it and have not driven it since)
When I parked it after about 1min of driving I smelled a burning smell. Dont know how else to describe.

This problem is very recent in development. Began after our first cold weather.

Now do you think there is more to this than just an exhaust leak? Should we take the car in to the dealer?

I got an exhaust leak after I installed my up-pipe. I removed the passenger side exhaust manifold for the install. A few months later the crosspipe on the header unbolted from the passenger side exhaust manifold. The main thing I noticed was how crazy loud my car was, but it was definately way slow. My "friend" said he had tightened those bolts. Ha!

yeah we took out exhaust mainfold too. NO problems for so long, then this comes out of nowhere.

i got one right now and its really bad as well. i've had a leak for about a month and everyone is booked because of sema and other stuff. don't take it to the dealer, take your car into a performance shop and tell them about it.

we dont really have any performance shops around here...
I was on a diff website and they said that an exhaust leak will destroy the graphite gaskets... could this be a manifold leak destroying the gaskets, thus getting louder and worse over time?

Lay on your back, probably don't even need a jack. Remove that plastic cover under the bumper; three screws like four plastic fasteners. You should be able to see the cross pipe and where the up pipe meets the exhaust manifold. I bet you find the leak, mine was gaping open. And don't be driving your car with a leak. Oh yeah, but if you are making full boost, it's probably not the up pipe at all. When I had the leak, i could only make like 5 psi full throttle.

But if I am making full boost, it could be the manifold?
Too bad i HAVE to drive my car and have no time to fix it today...

ok this is jessica on my own account...
i think maybe it is the downpipe instead of the manifold due to the fact that i am still reaching full boost and the dp gaskets are stock. i doubt its uppipe because the problem has gotten worse over time thus i think the problem is a leak destroying the stock gaskets (i have copper gaskets on the uppipe).

anyway, i still need to check where the leak is coming from, but that is what i think now.

I think you are probably right, you did have to remove the downpipe to install your uppipe. Your leak most likely is after the turbo if you can still make full boost. But, it shouldn't hurt your power I don't think?

one thing u should try doing is have ur wife sit in the car and rev it while u put ur head under the hood and try to pinpoint the noise...finding out where the noise comes from makes ur life 10x easier heh...just driving it and hearing noise isnt gonna get u far...u MUST listen to it while some1 else rev's...try it

Take spray bottle with soapy water and spray the pipes. If you see bubbles being made you got a leak.
