Location: Long Beach, CA
Ambient Temp: 75.2
Elevation: Sea level
Weather: Sunny
Track and Conditions: Asphalt
Tires: Stock 225/45 Dunlop SP Sport 01

Car: 2009 WRX
Tuner: Naji @ Looney Tuning
Dyno Info: Road tune
Peak HP at RPM: 282hp @ 5832 RPM
Peak Torque at RPM: 287 lb @ 4118 RPM
Baseline hp/tq for a stock on same dyno: WRX 2.5L
Target Boost: 18.5
Target AFR: 11.1
Fuel: 91 "So Cal" fuel
Engine/Power Modifications: Tsudo downpipe, SPT cat back, K&N drop in filter
Driveline Modifications: Stock
Suspension Modifications: Eibach springs
Other Modifications: Stock

I had Naji "looney tune" my car Saturday. The car has a Tsudo catless downpipe, SPT cat back, K&N drop in filter and on 91 So Cal gas . Boost is set to 18.5 psi and it tapers to 14.3 by the 7000 redline. AFR in the mid to high 11:1. Gained 50 ft-lbs of torque and 33 hp max. Will be getting an intake and probably a top mount and going back for a retune.

Naji tunes via road tune, mainly does Evo's but has done some subies. The tsudo sounds great with the SPT; definitely not changing the exhaust.

SPT will rape you of sooooo much power. trust me I held onto mine until I got tuned with it off completely and the gains made me drool.

DUMP THE SPT!!! Subaru spans so much BS on the SPT and it is a such a power killer

the spt is just quieter but i doubt it will hold this guy back...i wouldnt really consider a 3"-4" exhaust necessary at >350whp...but it looks pretty wack and is expensive

I bet you I wouldn't see a 10hp gain by changing out exhausts.....which to me isn't worth the noise brought on by the others. Plus the price at $300 for the SPT; now if I had to pay full price I would have gone elsewhere.

i'll take that bet. what are the stakes?

toss on a full 3" and tune for it, you'll see more than 10hp.

+1 on this.

I have ran the spt, UR, invidia, and now turbo xs. Spt was by far the biggest pos not to mention sounded terrible.

Naji screen name is nj1266 on here and Looney Tuning on socalevo.net

You guys seem to have more of a problem with my exhaust than I do. I like the sound, I like that it is quiet inside the car as does my 2 year old. If you guys or vendors would like to send me a 3" cat back I would be willing to pay to have my car retuned using your exhaust and compare the numbers. I would then send you $300 cash which is what I paid for the SPT otherwise please stop ****ting on my thread; you don't see me going on yours complaining about your "dyno queen" numbers.

4ST-AIR, your thread says you gained 13hp and 28tq by changing out the exhaust, you have a built motor and supporting mods...I'm stock.

no problem here with a quiet exhaust, and no need to get defensive either, at least not from what i've read. if you feel like i'm blanketyblanking in your thread, i'd be glad to delete my posts.

more on topic, you made a statement about the difference between an open exhaust and your spt that wasn't accurate. maybe you were misinformed? maybe if you had known that you could get more hp, you'd be willing to sacrifice the noise for power? maybe not. i liked the power of my txs rfl when i had it, but went to a magnaflow, then to prodrive, spt, then to the stock axleback for the sake of noise. either way, nobody is ****ting in your thread, just sharing experience. and it's still more than 10hp difference

loud exhaust is all nice & powerful (as its all i ever had) buddyclub, invidia n1, and now my hks carbon/ti, but we really dont need to be asking to get ref'd or at least I dont, too much to go back, ever!

quiet is nice as long as its not holding you back too too much, im switching the hks carbon/ti to something quieter

I'm not being defensive and I'm willing to learn; show me the numbers of another 09 wrx sedan that has changed just the cat back portion and got more than 10hp over the SPT; before and after #'s are suffice. I know my exhaust is 2.5" all the way out and not a true 3" exhaust but I don't think it is necessary for my power output.

I have heard nothing but good things about looney tuning. Also interested in SN. Most importantly I've heard his attention to detail is second to none.

the 2.5" may be hurting your car MORE than a bigger turbo at more power.

The reason i say this is that a vf turbo struggles to hold boost past 5000rpm.....so anything you can do to greatly decrease the back pressure on the turbine helps alot.

whereas a atp35 that can run 30psi......you could just run 24psi instead of 22 psi to make up for the restriction.....just a theory though.

Im actually contemplating running my dom4xtr on e85 with the stock tbe to see what happens.

flowers will come out of your tailpipe. bet it would sound pretty cool too, all that intake and charge noise.

any idea how the catalyst material holds up to e85? or at what temp they become effective (igniting the excess fuel)? i'd think you'd burn through it pretty fast, no?

I actually talked with my tuner yesterday and he mentioned the same thing; once I get a new intake and top mount I will have an exhaust shop build me a 3" midpipe back and split it into the dual 2.5's.

its only lean in 2 spots....if you look at the numbers at the top of the graph is 11.1-11.2 95% of the way.

i changed my redline AFR from 10.8 to 12.5 and didnt really see a change in the EGT's. In my experience the EGT is effected way more by the timing.

But i cant log my EGT's so maybe my gauge doesnt react fast enough...

As was mentioned the problem with the exhaust is that it goes from a 3 inch downpipe to a 2.5 inch mid pipe back to a 3 inch exhaust. Moving from 3 inch to 2.5 inch flow is a big no no in my book. Had the exhaust been 2.5 inch all the way, it would have been better than the variation in diameter size on the current set-up.

As the op mentioned, one way to fix this is to replace the 2.5 mid-pipe with a 3 inch one. IMO, there are two more mods that this car needs:

1. A better TMIC. The stock one is a joke and Subie made it impossible to swap the STI TMIC like you can do no the 06-07 WRX. I think Subie did it on purpose so not to eat into the STI sales. A better heat sink will allow the tuner to run more timing advance at the top end. I noticed that I was able to run more timing advance on an 08 STI than on this 09 WRX. Both cars had a TBE with a drop-in. I suspect that the crappy TMIC on the WRX is the culprit.

2. An in the fender intake will also do wonders to lower the temp of the intake charge. I am very partial to the AEM intake. On one 07 WRX with a VF series TBE, TMIC, and AEM intake that I tuned, I did not even have to tune the MAF for the intake. But that is only one case. Others could be different. The intake is also CARB legal which is a big plus in CA.

3. One thing that I noticed on these 09 WRXs is that the initial tip-in boost tends to spike high. So a tuner must lower WGDC well below other WRXs and STis at tip-in. I suspect that Subie is using a restrictor pill with a small size hole. A small size pill will allow you to hold more boost, but it does make the boost spikey and erratic. A larger hole pill makes the boost smoohter and consistent, but it does not hold as much as a smaller pill. You will have to run higher WGDC with a larger hole pill. I think swapping the pill to an 04-06 STi pill will cure this behavior. I think the 04-06 STI pills are the ideal pills for the VF serie turbo and the stock bleed type BCS.

The bracketed numbers are from the stock tune so, the tuned AFR is ~11.8
