Buffalo > Pittsburgh 226 miles
55 degrees, sunny & dry, no vent used, no defrost or AC, windows closed, moonroof open for last few miles only One stop @ a rest stop, but aside from that 100% highway Cruise Control set at 71 mph (speed limit 65, but with the end of the month quota & holiday traffic, cops everywhere so I used the cruise to keep off my lead foot) Gauge read AVG MPH at 64 MPG 32.1 Pittsburgh > Buffalo 226 miles 50 degrees & raining, no vent used, no AC or defrost, windows closed One stop for gas & coffee Only used Cruise Control about 50% of the time but was set to 75mph, when off cruise was typically right around 78mph Gauge read AVG MPH 65 MPG 32.4 (yes these are gauge MPG figures but with my dealer adjusting the gauge & accounting for the odometer error, the AVG MPG gauge is typically within .1-.2 MPG accurate) Keep in mind that there's still winter fuel blends here. A friend of mine just got a 2013 that he picked up in November & on his ride down at 70mph on Cruise Control (we both have CVTs) he got 34 MPG calculated. These are honestly my best #s yet. But I still get annoyed that I'm 2 shy of him. I feel my car will always be on the lower end regardless of variables. But I will say, if I were to drive at 55 or 60 MPH, I'd probably be close to 36 MPG. It seems at 73/75ish I can get into the low 30s & at 80MPH I'm right around 30. I'll take it. I'm happy with my highway experience finally. Now if only my "extreme city" or whatever you call it wasn't so awful my mixed #s wouldn't disappoint me so. I've always said that from the beginning, my problem really is with EPA's definition of city driving. |

Just filled up on my way home from work. 391.8 / 12.250 = 31.983 MPG. Display stated 33.3 avg for tank. I finally reached the 30mpg club. Took 6k miles. Hope it is not just an anomoly.
Only variables that changed were after last fill - drove immediately back on highway for about 65 + miles, and today's refeul was full serve, first click, so not sure if the car was full. Mind you, I also remove pump after first click, but I am usally holding the pump while filling, this was set, guy walked away. The rest of the prev tank was my usual normal commute/drive needs. |

Just filled up, display said 32.1 mpg, odometer 339, took 11.08 gallons for 30.81...mpg. Granted that Sunday was some serious Pennsylvania hilly back road driving with a lot of 'oh, so that's where this road goes' moments... all for an Easter feast...

I'd just like to add that based on the launch powerpoint of the 2012 Impreza in NYC, the sedan has a drag coef of 0.306 and the hatch has a drag coef of 0.329. Regardless of what the EPA says, the drag coefficients provide a better indicator of fuel economy at highway speeds. Of course, drag becomes exponentially more important as speed increases; the sedan may have an easier time achieving the EPA highway mileage than the 5-door.

0.329 is still pretty good. According to wikipedia, the toyota supra was the same value.

Looking into the CR numbers, they do show the hatchback getting 2 mpg highway less than the sedan. So why don't the EPA tests Subaru ran show that? |

So would I, but the cvt's are both rated 36 highway. Oh, I see. 35.72 vs 35.74, and 33.30 vs 33.55, unrounded. I wonder why the larger difference with the manual?

Possible it's the transmission, theoretically the cvt should be able to optimize the engine considering the drag where the 5 speed is just a fixed ratio. That works fine in the lab or on the flat at low speed, but as soon as the engine can't pull it anymore the mileage goes to heck.
I was looking forward to Consumer Reports doing a test with the 5-speed, but when they tested the hatchback they also picked a cvt. |
