Default BE Hybrid Engine Build

My 2000 LGT is looking like the headgaskets are about to go so I am thinking instead of just replacing the head gasket I would build something strong for my turbo kit. So here is what I got so far, what do you guys think?

Budget Version
EJ20 WRX Short Block $400
EJ25 Crank (Currently on Car)
EJ25 Heads (Currently on Car)
STI Pistons $200
STI Rods $150
Subaru Head Gasket $60
Subaru Head Bolts $85
----------------------------
Total $895

If I Can Raise More Money Version
EJ20 WRX Short Block $400
EJ25 Crank (Currently on Car)
EJ25 Heads (Currently on Car)
Wiseco Pistons $476
Eagle Rods $320
Cometic Head Gasket $97
Cosworth Bearings $68
ARP Head Bolts $175
----------------------------
Total $1536

What do you think, what else should I add to the list, I am a rookie at this so I appreciate all suggestions and criticism.

Why are you using the EJ25 crank for your engine build?

Add another couple thousand for all your miscellaneous gaskets, timing belt, pumps, filters, bolts, seals...

If you're going to turbo, you might as well do a full swap.

nope, I figured if I was going to build something, to make it a little stronger than the stock WRX engine, let me hear what the pros have to say and their parts list

I love going around telling people that I have a "Hybrid 2.5RS/STi engine" in my car, especially environmentalists, and they get confused when I'm roaring around the neighbourhood with turbo/BOV noises.

Axis Power Racing, in my opinion, is one of the best pros at building Subaru engines, and you can see what he uses in his product list:

i agree with the full swap thing, but if u have a limited budget. i think its a good idea.

i want to know the detail if you really gonna do it.

btw, do not forget to change ur suspension setup after u done it. i mean not KYB or AGX with H&R or Eibach springs but the real height and bound-rebound adjustable suspension (i do not know why, i do not like the "coilover" word, hehehehe).

That's exactly what I had done. It has a low compression ratio, good for a turbo setup.

Eagle rods probably aren't necessary nor are the headbolts unless you plan on 400+ hp. Spend the money on ECU and tuning instead.

I figured I would build it up right away so I wouldnt have to worry later, but I have a new plan

My heads
EJ257 Shortblock $250
EJ257 Pistons and Rods $300
EJ257 Crank $150
Cometic Head Gasket $97
Subaru Headbolts $85
----------------------
Total $882

and bolt up the TD04 I have for now, which should give me OK power and quick spool, I am thinking 220-230whp and then upgrade to a bigger turbo later.

Use my stock ecu with an emanage piggyback for management

Let me know how it goes - I have yet to turn up the boost and implement any real EM on my setup, but I have the TD04 and EJ257 like you will have.

You rang? Listen to these people and ditch the Ej20. The problem is that the bore differential is too great to get a proper seal with your Ej25 heads. The formula for what you want to do is very simple: Buy a NEW ej257 shortblock from the dealership, along with a turbo oil pump and water pump and go custom from there.

The only big challenge with this approach is if you have OBD-II testing. If you don't you are golden. If you do? Maybe time to think about a complete USDM swap instead...

Now that I have read the rest and the "new plan; if you want to do it on the super cheap, just use an Ej22E open deck NA block with your heads. That's what my next project will use. It's mid 8's for CR and the only compromise is .3l of displacement...

Just don't turn up the boost too high on an open deck block. Better to melt a piston than crack a wall? Dunno...

That's just an ongoing FALSE internet rumour. Ej20's went open deck in the mid 90's. The EJ25 was a problem because it was just too close to the edge from a design standpoint and just went to too big of a bore. The Ej22 is actually probably stronger than the WRX's EJ20. Just like the wee little Ej18, the Ej22E has cylinder walls that are thicker than the EJ20. It's a rock solid little block that just got a bad rap because it was saddled with less than stellar heads. And the whole open deck thing was made infamous by Mike Shields and his old Toadnet article. It's long ago been shown that his statements about open deck Ej25's don't carry over to the whole EJ series of engines.

I have friends who have successfully used the Ej22e on 350chp builds. If you change to forged pistons, you can go even further than that. It's not a new formula and definitely not something I can take credit for. Shoot Quirt Crawford an email if you doubt my word on it. He built some high powered EJ22's back in his sandrail days before we had a WRX or even a dream of an Ej257 powered STi.

get the head gaskets fixed under the Subaru TSB (as long as you're under 100k miles) and just leave it alone.

Then if you must, pick up a spare motor and start building it. At least this way, you've got a good warranted stocker to re-sell later.

My $0.02
