Ej22t compression question
so i have a ej22t motor (92 t-legacy), just bought it localy. I drove it home apx 5-7 miles and it was smoken like a sob, next thing i did was compression test it, and passenger side had nothing in one cylinder and 60 lbs of compression in the rear cylinder on the drivers side i had 150 in both cylinders, so i was thinking headgaskets, so i went thew the trouable of a few days doing heads and put it back toughter and now bang wont start and i have the same compression numbers, do u guys think i have a warped head?? im using the stock ej22t heads with it btw, OR dose it sound more like my pistons rings are shot? the engine and car have over 200k miles on them.

I don,t know but I would'nt do the heads without middle end on these things I just bought a 94 turbo EJ22 it had the heads rebuilt a couple months before I bought it . the thing is the thing ran pretty good it only made a noise like lifters when you started it cold? and when it was hot coming to a stop from sustaned speeds it would stall! so 3 days later I tuned it up got it to stop stallin got my buddy to help me take the GTS up to my other buddies to store. By the time I got 1 town over it lost its power when I pulled in the lot she was makin lots of noise chunky, scrappy, tickey, banging noise!!!! after some examination the middle end is doneso the cheapist alternative for me was to buy a JDM EJ20G (I think it's a G anyways??) I hope it works?! so if I were you I would either rebuild the entire engine or buy another (I could'nt find any EJ22t's anywere but if you want mine(the blocks still fine I think needs rotating assembly) I'd give to ya real cheap but it would cost to much to ship that anyways.
good luck !! |

Its good to do a leakdown before taking it apart. I usually check all cars that I will be pulling the head(s) off to make sure there is not more than one problem. Then you can see where the cylinder pressure is going (coming out intake or exhaust=vales, blowing out of crankcase=head gasket or pistion/rings, blowing our rad=headgasket, blowing out the adjacent cylinder=gasket).
Also I always have the head checked & resurfaced if needed at a machine shop. Putting back on a warped head will not last long. |

well my engine bores on that side of the engine looked fine here is attached picture. however now you have me like thinking i may pull 2 of my pistons out and check out the rings, i did not see any metal in the block or any evidance of broken rings (scoring or anything) but if i find that my rings are broken is the motor tosted or can i just replace those rings and call it a day?

You can just replace the piston.

However seeing how i have the block down this far dose anyone have some sti rods or a sti crank i can drop it because i am so close to spliting the block open anyways i might as well do something cool well im in there. will the sti rods and crank fit or will i need to get machine work done? |

I have a few individual pistons, you do not need to replace all the pistons. You need to buy a full set of rings from Subaru.
How much money you want to spend is the deciding factor on how "cool" you want to be with your upgrades. |

i agree, it comes down to how in depth i want to go into the engine to make power. Well unfortunately this needs to be my daily driver and i need to get it back on the road asap so i can get to work etc.also we here in WA are having some crappy weather and i would really like to have my awd back, So i that said i want to put it back running for cheap until i can accumulate all the parts i will need stroke it.
So i will need 2 pistons piston 1 and 3 both passanger side. and i will need 1 unused ej22t headgasket. i will be posting pics of my ringland damage i just hope i dont have metal in the engine now :-( Also thank you for sugesting my ringlands whoever said that would be turned out to be correct. Are n/a pistons the same as turbo pistons because i have a n/a ej22 motor laying around not being used. also what tool will i need to remove that front wrist pin cover looks like a torks bit or something thanks Last edited by 91turbosedaan; 11-12-2008 at 12:38 AM. |
