Default Might become 99 STI type R owner (pics)

Hello there,
my first post in this forum for the simple reason I might become a 99 STI type R owner.

I live on Mauritius Island and actualy own a 220 hp lightweight Toyota Glanza Turbo

glanza pic : putfile.com/pic.php?img=3821413 (sorry I cannot link until I reach 8 posts)

I have owned this little car for 6 years now and have spent quite some time working on it, so it will be hard to see her go. I have been active member on toyotagtturbo.com for a long time (under "azerty" name)

now I have the opportunity to move on a JDM 99 impreza STI type R

STI type R pic : putfile.com/pic.php?img=5220498

question I'm about to ask must have been asked hundred times, so sorry to ask again.
- other than what is said in this newbee faq, could you please tell me things to check before buying the car that would be specific to the rare type R model ?
- is there a full spec sheet about this car on this forum or somewhere else?
- your oppinion about this model and how does it compare to other scoobies ?
- what should I know?
- Subarus doesn't have the best reputation in term of engine reliability, I guess it mainly caused of some guys doing bad engine tuning trying to boost more without working proper fueling/timing and other related things. what should I know that would be specific to subarus boxers engine (as I have a toyota inline turbo background and I'm totaly virgin to boxer turbo engines).
- Mauritius has RON95, I understand that the type R has ingnition timing optimized for RON100. would an emanage ultimate a good add on? (I'm used to this unit and have one ready to be fitted)
- if there are URLs related to my basic question, please link me, I'll read where the info is

cheers
Zak Shaker

Head over to the pre 2002 turbo forums for more information. Oh and they aren't rare cars either. We've got at least 4 in town.

It's more or less like your average GC sti but with less doors.

Quote:

It looks alright. Like I mentioned above. Don't compare it to any USDM model though, it's far superior.

Quote:
- what should I know?
That it's going to be a hell of a lot quicker than your Toymotor!

You are completely right. I know a lot of guys who just slap in a boost tap, wind the sucker up to 18-19PSI without even touching anything else and then get pissed when things let go, get it fixed and carry on running the same till things let go, get it fixed and carry on again. Endless cycle.
Just get it tuned if you're going to do stuff like boost control.

Yeah sure, give it a whirl.

99 Type-R= My Dream Car...

I wish they made one in the US, as I love the two door GC. I would buy it in a heartbeat if I lived in a different country. Although you may find some info, there isnt gonna be much on this site about the Type-R. Take that hideous hood scoop off of it though.

Buy now!

that toyota is badass, the US gets screwed on all the cool cars. Is that car awd or fwd, and what kind of power does it make? It looks very lightweight and like it would handle great. Sort of looks like the new Impreza hatch coming out too.

the scoop will be removed for sure (up for sale ?? )
I'm meeting the subaru owner tomorrow to leave a deposit.

Yes the glanza is a crazy little pocket machine. it has a little 1300cc turbo engine, but mine was leaving behind WRX easily (power/weight ratio...). STI is an other story, as the glanza is a FWD only and does not have AWD grip...

He's talking about swaybars, and you're talking about strutbars.

Beautiful cars though.

Suber Krout, you don't know much about toyota and honda, do you ?? don't say that to a toyota owner ! in fact i'm starting to love the sub but the main difference with the toyota, is that on the toyota I was looking to see which mods could give more power, what I did (148 kw ATW on a standard internal 1300 cc turbo) . while on the subaru I'm looking which mod to do to have her as much reliable I can (not the same fun approach...). I was amazed to discover how many rebuilt threads there are in sub forums . don't be wrong I'm happy to have moved on that type R, but don't under-estimate toyota, they probably built most reliable and tunable engines... Honda side, well they have just inveted the V-tec... what is a prooven great feature that all other brands started to copy when the patent was gone (so 15 years later than honda...)

about the scoop, yes it is UGE, Lol, I'm planning to revert back to standard scoop asap
