Vic!
First off, i do already have a fire extinguisher in the car! I've always been careful since my 88 lebaron blew its entire oil supply out the bottom of the car, i thought "hey, that could caught fire!"

Back on topic, today, it was cold enough, the smell was back! I pulled over, popped the hood, MOTHER F'N BINGO there it was, BOTH rubber hoses were leaking, the one you can see from the front, and the one in the rear. As much as i'd like to get this done myself, I'm much more confident taking it to a dealer and having them perform it, so its documented, and if the problem ever comes back, I can point fingers and place blame!

Tomorrow I call to make an appointment for the car, time to get this fixed, now I can point to the motor and say, "look, leaking fuel, thanks for test driving it last time to find this!" (sarcastically)

Thanks again Vic,

Mark

ps, thanks for the input midnight scooby, but im positive it was coming from under the hood the entire time, you could smell it under there!

Who else has checked this out?

Friggen robot that built our cars must have been lazy. What

Sube151:

I have to say..... thank you... I think...

It started happening again yesterday...... I looked at that hose, where it connects to the fuel line... and sure enough... it was dripping fuel.... I about had a stroke! I was almost excited......

For me, it was dripping and running along the rubber lines and building up in a crevice on the engine block.

I immediately brought the car to the dealer, told them exactly where the fuel was coming from, and made them tighten that clamp.... (I don't have a long screwdriver like that)

So, we'll see what happens....

Achilles, Fluffybunny.... this looks like the one......

Midnight.... it's definitely not the tailpipe..... if you're having this problem also... you should have it checked out.... you should never, ever, smell raw, unburned fuel in the engine compartment of a fuel injected vehicule. This is not normal.

Hopefully, this fix nailed it on the head......

Again... Thanks!

So any beats on when somebody's car might go up in flames?
Wonder how SOA would respond to something like that?

Glad you found it kenneth.

i'm not a betting man, so i won't be making a wager... oh, and how much does a little fire extinguisher cost?

my car made the stink again today, but it was gone by the time i got to check in the engine compartment. scheduled an appointment on Friday morning (man, getting up early on a day off again sucks...). i stared and stared at that section of feul line to day and i wanna know, what is UNDER the rubber hosing? is that hosing a type of flexible fuel line, or is it only a heat/vibration shield? it the metal fuel line splut tight there

Achilles38WRX: i'd like to know how many miles your car has. Both Kenny and sube have/had 14000 miles or so when a noticable ammount of fuel began leaking. i'm guessing i still have a vapor leak, or only a trace at this point. enough to smell, but not enough to collect anywhere. i have just over 10k.

hopefully we're getting close...

matty

oh yeah, Midnight, thanks for the thoughts, that's exactly what i thought was the case at first, but after determining the smell was definately coming from the area near sube151's discovery, i've ruled out rich exhaust gases.

i have 17K miles on mine right now, the problem has been around for a while, maybe a few thousand miles, im not sure if its really a milage related question, probably just a cold temperature deal.
mine wont be fixed for a while now, i had an appointment to take it to the dealer tonight, but had some other problems (encounter with a tree )

It appears to be a simple piece of rubber hose joining the two ends of the metal fuel lines. I would guess it acts as a flex coupler for the otherwise rigid fuel plumbing. In Sube151's car, you could see the gasoline stains on the stuff underneath the leak. I've been keeping an eye on mine.

Sarge....

oh...

that's what i thought and didn't wanna think all at the same time...so the fuel line is only as good as that section of rubber hose really...to put it negatively...

well, that gives me some things to think a bit about. ideas to kick around...

thanks

Just for the record.. I experienced the *raw gas smell* today, and since I'd been getting horrendous gas mileage lately, I brought it to the dealer. Halfway through the day I realized I left my lunch in the car, went back to the dealer to get it, and dropped off at least 5 pages of this thread.

Will see what they say and let you guys know... when I got there they were waiting to hear back from SOA on the infamous P1443 code which they really want to blame on my turbo back exhaust

Yup.. blamed it on my exhaust.. said since my car is running with a cel caused by being catless it could cause the evaporative valve to not function properly... or something.

I'm about to have a heated argument about a bill when I go pick it up.. I just know it.

Angry raw fuel smell

i've just experienced the raw fuel smell also. the dealer is currently looking at my car to find the source. this is the 5 time my car has sat at the dealer for more than a couple of days waiting to get fixed! they've replaced the 2 and 3 injectors and the pcm all due to a check engine light.

Guys...

There is a 99.9% chance that the dealer will have no way to duplicate the gas smell problem. If your bringing it to them, and expecting them to fix it... good luck.

I brought mine in 4 times, no fix.

Really, you need to read Sube151's thread, and see his pictures about the hose clamps where the metal fuel line goes to the rubber one, have those clamps tightened anyways! What harm could come of that....

Be safe...

I took mine to the dealer, and told them that is exactly where I saw fuel dripping... they tightned them, no problems or other questions asked.....

Oh, and btw, I still have not experienced the smell again... and it has been cold.......so, it would have happened by now...

Angry mine too

well it started recently. last week driving to work my car started jerking, like it does when low on gas. well its doing this in 3,4 and 5th gear, part throttle it does this, full throttle it starts to clean up. went over most hoses and could not find any loose. also this is when i noticed a raw fuel smell, pulled the oil dipstick out to check the oil and you can smell it there also..now my car runs like crap and get bad gas mileage..its at the dealer and they said the plugs are fouled. not sure on that one unless its running reallllllll rich...will see what the dealer finds. build 03-01, mods turbo back exhaust, intake, BOV and MBC....

wrxracer,

Sounds like you have a different problem. How much
boost are you running? Are you sure you are smelling fuel from
where the dip stick is at? You sure you are not just smelling the oil?

If anybody thinks they have the fuel leak, take your car to the dealer and just have them tighten down the clamps. Its the safest thing you can do if you dont feel like messing with it.

Unhappy car problems..

not sure if my problem is the same, but the fuel smell if raw. i can not find where its coming from but when i went to check the oil level i noticed that it had a weird smell and when i put it to my nose it smelled like fuel, maybe the PCV system is not working right. not sure the car is at the dealer still since last thursday, not sure when i will get it back...sucks not having the car. as far as boost goes i was running about 16psi in 5th...again i do not think this is the problem but will have to wait and see....

I had that smell for the couple days after i got my new wrx, but i have been ignoring it by switch my air conditioning to inside routing instead of take air from outside. since you guys have mentioning the smell and seems like a lot people is having that problem. i just took my car for a run and try to do everything to my car (sudden acceleration, hard braking, quick turn, abusing clutch, etc) to make that smell but it just won't do it. i also check all the host after the run and i see no leaking or what so ever. when i first test drive a wrx from the dealer, i smell the same thing too after i park the car and check out the engine. and i ask the sales person, he said it's the clutch burning. i didn't ask why, but he seems not too impress about that smell. i know there's another post about the smell issue in vivid's forum. the address is http://www.johnnyhookup.com/cgi-bin/...=13&thread=166
it might not be much help but maybe you can get what you want to know there... anyway, i hope all you guys get to fix that problem soon. good luck y'all.

the bunny

(p.s. it's been about a week since the fix and i've tried it all to get it to happen. the weather's getting cold today, so maybe tomorrow i'll have a chance to try the cold start check as well.)

congrats!
mine's still smelly!
i had it at the dealer for the second time last wednsday, thursday the smell was back! I called the dealer's customer service line, and pissed and moaned and bytched and everything...... I gotta call from the service department this morning, to bring it in tomorrow evening, AND, i finally talked them into getting me a rental, they have no rental/loaner program at my dealership, and I'm sick of missing work because they cant fix this problem, so i managed to get a rental this time.

I do know where the clamps are, and I could spend a saturday digging for them and do it myself, by taking it to the dealer, i figure they are responisble if my car burns to the ground, and my car gets replaced. They're pushing they're luck too, twice is to many times to have a car leave their service garage leaking gas in the engine bay.

Wish me luck.

I've noticed the raw fuel smell when the motor is hot and I accelerate hard in 1st and 2nd. I have 16k miles on my car now and the smell is getting worse?? Along with this problem that the dealer denies is happening, I've had 1 radiator replacement due to leaking, both the headlight connectors replaced due to melting (replaced with Nissian heavy gauge connectors), and something else that's slipping my mind right now.

One more for the log.

Driving home Monday and I was hit by almost over powering fuel smell.

I called the dealer and the service rep had me call SOA roadside assistance and have it brought in. They specifically requested I didn't drive it.

They didn't get to look at it until today (tow truck driver took it to the wrong dealer - :monkey: moron!). They were able to duplicate the problem. According to the dealer it was the two rubber fuel lines under the manifold. He said they have tightend it up and so far no more problems.

Of course it's not as cold as it was Monday - 9 deg. F. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

The dealer said this is the second one they've seen and they are reporting it to SOA as a problem. Hopefully SOA will come up with a good fix as it seems there are quite a few with the identical problem.

Not sure of the build date on the WRX but it was part of the first shipment. I got it about a week after they went on sale. I have about 8K miles on it. Mods are cat-back, K-N and airbox opened up. Never had a CE light or any other problems.

I will pick the car up in the morning. I will post if it re-occurs.

Mike G.

Edit - Follow up: Picked the car up from the dealer this morning. It's still cold out although not as cold as the other day. The invoice has the following text: (all spellings are the dealers)

"Customer states there is a very strong smell of gas coming from the engine

Cause: Loose 442141 fuel injector deliveryhose oneor all

... stuff about the techs licnese and parts costs omitted ...

RR Alternator & Pwr strg pump located fuel rail hoses tightened all clamps (seep fuel causing very strong fuel smell) Rinsed off let run 1HR no more fuel leak. (turbo engine)"

No smell on the drive into work. Will update the log if it reoccurs.

GMan,
make sure next time its really cold you check that thing out. Mines back at the dealer (for the third time) to try to solve this problem. This time, they are actually going to tighten down those lines that are leaking, to do this they had to remove the intake manifold, and to reinstall the intake manifold, they had to wait for gaskets, which is why im without my car until this evening (3 days)
the f'd up thing is, LAST time i brought it in, i told them to tighten the clamps that were leaking, they CLAIMED they did, but this time, in order to tighten them down, they had to remove the intake manifold???? So i guess last time they were just lying to me.
This time, they were able to fix it because "we saw the gas leaking" WHAT? Like they didnt belive ME when i told them it was leaking the first TWO trips to the dealer? GEEZUS!
The only good news is that the new service rep i have there is great, and actually listens to what i have to say (the other guy acted like i didnt know what i was talking about).
I should get mine back tonight, will post any updates, i will also request that they have a chat with SOA about this.

I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of your dealer visit. I have this problem, and i hate going to my dealer who consistantly proves themselves inept at even meaningless tasks. ( :monkey: Morrie's subaru!)
Is there any risk of driving my car before taking it to the dealer? I would very much like to avoid a reverse batmobile/spontaneous giant fireball destroying front end of car situation if at all possible.
thanks,
grant
