Default 2004 WRX: Engine swap vs Transmission swap

I have a stage 2 2004 WRX, the power is plenty for daily driving, but the car feels lackluster on track, especially a tight track where the turbo barely spools up (if at all) before I arrive at the next corner. The car is not accelerating fast enough. 2nd gear is too much, 3rd gear feels like there is no power at all.

I have a strong feeling that my problem has more to do with the stupid grocery getter 5 speed transmission than then 2.0 litre engine. If I can only do one thing, what would make the biggest impact here? A STI 6 speed tranny swap or engine swap/bigger turbo?

The 6 speed gearing makes the 2L lot more fun even though it adds a bit of weight.

Bigger turbo will make the 5 speed seem worse due to added lag. 2.5L torque would probably help, but I went the 6 speed route myself after switching to a 16G.

The 4.44 5 speed I swapped into mine is much more lively. I've been told the gearing in this is very similar to gears 1-5 on the 6 speed. I'd go trans swap personally. Getting a VF34 in this coming week and will give my thoughts on gearing and slightly bigger turbo if you're interested. Can't wait to track it in the spring with a couple other mods.
