'04-'06 STi gauge cluster in MY93 GC8
I've heard of people being able to do this with the MY99+ GC8 as it matches the dimensions more. But has anyone been able to successfully swap the STi cluster on pre-MY99 GC8s? I've only heard that it creates a big gap on the original dash trims / fittings. It would be nice to have the additional light sensors such as DCCD, temps, etc...
I do not intend to replace the original trim with an STi trim due to additional gaps and mismatched colors.

Thanks Jaxx. If it suits, my plan to use ditch the cable speedo, since my new setup will be a USDM STi 6-speed, USDM STi ECU, essentially a complete powertrain conversion. That's why I was hoping to see if someone has already gotten the STi guage cluster to work, so I can get better visual indicators.

My first swap I put an 02 Cluster into a 94L dash. Takes a lot of trimming the plastic behind the cluster and some trimming on the cluster itself to make it fit. I then made mounts out of some aluminum sheetmetal. I'll see if I have pictures when I get home from work. For the gauge surround to look right you'll have to trim both the GC and GD surrounds so that they can be glued together. Then use fiberglass/bondo to cover/smooth out the gaps and make it look right.

Sorry no before and after shots.
You can see I basically had to remove all the plastic going between the lower left and lower right side of the opening for the cluster. Also cut off the upper mounting points that stuck down into the opening. I also had to trim all of the plastic that stuck up on the top of the cluster itself which was used for the upper GD mount point to make it narrow enough to fit within the opening. Sorry no pictures of the mounts I made. I basically bent two C shaped pieces of aluminum sheet. The opening on the C's faced inboard sandwiching the left and right edge of the cluster ( like [===], the === being the cluster itself ). Used small screws to fix those to both the front and rear plastic of the cluster housing. On the outside of those metal brackets I riveted some L shaped pieces of aluminum to create a mounting surface (now looks like _[===]_ ). I also attached some opposing L shaped pieces to the remaining left and right plastic of the cluster opening to help reinforce the area and provide for a more sturdy mounting point than the 2 remaining OEM mounting holes. The vertical planes of the two opposing L shaped pieces could then be attached to each other with some small nuts and bolts. |
