I previously reported no extra TBO noise. Yesterday, after my '17 WRX Limited was sitting, for a day, in the garage, in the very rainy PNW, a subtle whistling (for lack of a better term) noise was heard, while clutch pedal pushed in, after a cold start. I only drive around the block, for shifter adjustment trial, so no real warm up. I didn't notice it, this morning.

My TOB and clutch assembly started going bad this early summer. Pedal would squeak (there is a bulletin for this), and my TOB would make a chirping sound when warm, 30 min into a drive. Since the TOB sound started it didn't go away for two weeks until my dealer replaced the TOB, clutch assembly, and clutch plate under warranty. Have a video if you want to see it. 2016 WRX btw, stock engine no tune

Even if it does start to squeak there are replacement kits that resolve the issue and have been used by many members of this forum with good results. I looked and the same part that's replaced on earlier models, 30502AA120, is also used in the 2016 wrx. As always, ask your tuner if they know for sure if the part will fit.

If you get a VW, get a $0 deductible extended warranty. I had many build issues with mine (i.e. issues from the factory that VW would not honor post warranty). It was a great car, but with German cars, the warranty milestones aren't recommendation, it is a requirement.
The new GTis have TIVCT, so gains are huge with a tune. However, do note that once tuned, you will be black-balled at dealerships as VW has ways of knowing you have a tune. Once flagged, all dealerships know about it. Going to a "stock" tune prior to a warranty claim will NOT work. VW keeps track of how many times the ECU is reset and I believe they also look at checksums of their software to see if it matches the expected value. Only negatives I can think of is reliability and torque steer. It didn't torque steer much, but when you really laid into it, it does without fail. |

11k miles and my master cylinder caused the issue. Dealer wouldn't believe me. I had the worst clutch until 30k when it started slipping. I kept telling them it was the master cylinder and they didn't believe me. Replaced clutch and still had the problem. After a week of fighting they replaced my master cylinder and all of my problems were gone. My master cylinder kept fluid pressure in my slave cylinder so you can imagine what happened. I would barley touch my clutch (resting my foot on it) and it would disengage. That is on my15. No issues or noises after 15k miles on new clutch and master cylinder

I just recently had the TOB replaced under warranty on my 2016 WRX with 15K miles. It whirled from the factory and would get louder the warmer the clutch got. It just kept slowly getting worse. Finally at my last service I asked them to check it out and (surprisingly) they immediately approved replacement. My main complaint and concern was how rough the engagement was getting. Now my clutch pedal seems so light and it's the smoothest it's ever been.

TOB noise is not normal and finally Subaru has acknowledged this issue with a redesigned TOB with TSB (03-78-17).
According to the TSB, the new TOB will be in cars after VIN H9824973, so look out for that for those of you ordering a new WRX. |

Mines makes all kinds of squeaks now. The question is whether this is a mechanical problem that will affect the operation of the clutch.
I never bother to get it replace because I know it will come back after doing research of people replacing them. And people that have done so, is off of the noise but not because their clutch stop working. To this day, I don't know the answer. I can deal with a noisy clutch. But I can't deal with a clutch that doesn't work, because then I can't drive it. I would just chalk it up to cheap ass items then something gone wrong. |

Mine has been randomly squeaking for the last 2 years but never really gave an issue. It hasn't been making any noises as of lately whatsoever, even in the rainy weather... |

Good news there. Mine is an H983xxxx. I was simply expecting the noise to crop up eventually, now maybe it won't. Not that I'd worry, came up on my '13 and I had it replaced under warranty. 6 months later noisy again. I just didn't worry about it after that.

Bummer mine's H981XXXX. Guess I'll have to get rid of it.
Ah F that it's way too much fun for that. And it's pushing 10K miles and quiet. |

Mine started making noise about a year after purchased. Been 7 years now and sounds the same.

Might want to ghost drive that car straight into the local dealership's front window like that old Discount Tire commercial. They take stuff back, right? Right? |
