Yeah you can see in the pic here. I have all of the wiring from my car plugged into the radio.

http://i.imgur.com/6qjazD5.jpg

3 unused plugs. The brown one is USB from what I've been able to find online, not sure what the other 2 plugs are. Probably related to steering wheel controls (that I don't have) or something. What's interesting is that I have something plugged into the rear view camera port. Can't imagine what my car would be feeding that port since I don't have a rear camera (and no 08-14 WRX did). Maybe some VSS signals or something.

In any case, the radio works great and sounds much better than the stock radio.

The harness is simple to make. It's finding the parts that are a pain. I also found out that I did not need the camera detect wire with the Chinese head unit from Aliexpress.

Just ordered mine sourced from a crosstrek yesterday on ebay for $200. Hoping that the new screen combined with the HD radio makes it a more tolerable experience. I plan on upgrading the speakers next as I already have a somewhat decent aftermarket under seat subwoofer.

Hello all, I've had the CP435L1 installed in my 2011 WRX for several months with no issues. I also added an amp and sub to this headunit with an adjustment knob so I can control the bass level.

Yesterday my car battery died. No big deal, went and got a new battery and installed it with no issues. So I start my car and everything seems good except now only my rear speakers are working. No sound from the front speakers, and no sound from the sub.

I tried to drive over to my install guy before they closed (didn't make it in time) but during the drive the front speakers and sub started working a few times (probably 5 times during a 40 minute drive, but the fronts and sub would only work for abut 5 seconds before going out again).

I know this sounds like a loose wire or something, but if all I did was change the battery how is that even possible? Could the headunit itself be shorting out?

I'm gonna take it in Monday or Tuesday hopefully, but if anyone has any ideas or similar experiences with this headunit I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!

You'll enjoy the HD radio. I almost exclusively listen to either HD radio, USB drive or Bluetooth.

Has anyone seen any of these around lately? I looked on LKQ but it looks like they are getting pretty expensive on there. The cheapest I saw was $350.

I got one out of a Crosstrek CM631UD. Was like $200ish on eBay. I think it came from LKQs eBay page too

Is there a difference between the CM631UD and the CP435L1 besides the HD radio?

I purchased a CP635U1 for my '12 WRX, not realizing that I would lose steering wheel controls. I was wonder what unit I need to retain all controls (sat radio isn't needed in my case)

I was also wondering if I put the CP625U1 in my '13 Impreza (Base) if it would work without any loss of functionality.

See this post (#100 in this same thread).

The CP435L1 is very similar to the North American Forester model CP635U1 (and all of the rear connectors are identical between the 435 and 635). However, the CP435L1:
  • Lacks HD radio capability
  • Is not compatible with OEM sat radio tuner modules (& has no SAT button)
  • Lacks voice prompts for Bluetooth setup
  • AM radio steps at 9 kHz instead of 10 kHz (so on many North American stations, you won't quite be able to tune to exactly the correct frequency).
There ought to be a secret dealer setup function to switch to North American frequency steps, but if that exists nobody has found it yet.

Does your 2012 WRX have the steering wheel controls (SWCs) that include the phone/Bluetooth functions (answer call, end call, and "talk")? If so, those are compatible with the CP635U1.

The CP625U1 is a Forester model, essentially the same as the CZ624U1 model that was used in 2011-2014 WRX and STi, and 2011 Impreza. It will mostly work in a base 2013 Impreza.

But if your Impreza has the SWCs without the phone/BT buttons, the car's SWCs will be incompatible. You can retrofit the SWCs with BT buttons to get working volume and tune buttons, but for the rest (mode and BT buttons) you would have to run a new 3rd wire from the steering column to the 20-pin radio harness.

Also, you'll find the the Impreza's aux harness has an 8-pin plug, where the CP625U1 has a 16-pin socket for aux+mic.

See this post for other differences/issues between the wiring on the CP625U1 vs. the 2013 Impreza.

Yes the '12 WRX has SWC including start call, end call and the "talk" function I don't know if there is something wrong with my headunit then because none of the buttons have any functionality with the CP635U1 or is there something I missed

Also there was an error in my previous post the second model number should have also been the CP635U1, not CP625U1. I ask because if I couldn't get the unit to work in my 12 WRX I was wondering if it would work in my base 13 Impreza. Also has SWC and Bluetooth buttons.

Then the CP635U1 should be 100% plug-and-play in your 2012 WRX. It may mean the 635 is defective. As a sanity check, make sure all of your 2012's SWCs still work with the original CZ624U1 (if you haven't checked that already).

Look closely at the pins on the white 20-pin power/speaker socket on the back of the 635. Are any bent or missing?

A 2013 Impreza that has BT SWCs will be mostly compatible with the CP635U1. See the links I posted above for the differences. Your 2013 Impreza will even supply the reverse gear and parking brake signals that the 635 wants (so it would be very easy to add a rear camera).

But the 2013 Impreza's SWCs won't work any better or worse -- they are electrically the same as your 2012 WRX's SWCs.

Just checked by reinstalling the the CZ624U1 and all of the SCW came back. Checked all the pins on the back of the unit. All appear to be intact. Guess I got hosed by a fellow NASIOC member. :/

The stock head unit in my 2011 WRX died - which OEM units are plug & play? I just need steering wheel controls and bluetooth to work. Dealer wants $1100 to replace it.

Edit: Sounds like CP635U1 is the "upgrade" model and CZ624U1 is the stock replacement model?

Default Problems with steering wheel controls after CM631UD install

I installed the CM631UD OEM radio in my 2012 Impreza and now when I hit next/up on my steering wheel controls, it pauses then I have to hit it again to go to the next song. (sometimes it goes to the next song) Then sometimes when it does go to the next song it won't play and I have to unplug my iPhone and start the song before plugging it back in. I have an iPhone 6S and I use the factory USB plug in for the car.

Yeah, it's time somebody consolidated the info:

For these North American models...
  • 2011 Impreza models that got OEM HU model CZ624U1 from the factory
  • 2011-2014 WRX and STi that got OEM HU model CZ624U1
  • 2011-2013 Forester that got OEM HU model CP625U1
...the North American Forester model CP635U1 is the best fit.

The Europe/China Forester model CP435L1 will also work, but has several drawbacks that I list in this post (#1285 in this same thread).

Europe Forester model CP335R1, and Australia Forester model CP235K1 would also work, but the controls are mirrored for RHD cars. These likely also have limited or no compatibility with the North American OEM Sirius/XM satellite radio tuner accessory.

All of those (CP635U1, CP435L1, CP335R1, and CP235K1) do have the line-level subwoofer output which can be used with an aftermarket sub. See this post (#341 in this same thread).

The North American model CM631UD (used in 2012-2014 Impreza and Crosstrek) will work, but will have some minor issues if used in the car models/years I listed above. See this post (#100 in this same thread).
