Yeah I find this annoying. It's like the GR Corolla Morizo announcement when there's already going to be a scarce supply of Cores and Circuit Editions.

Might be interesting to see their May GR86 sales vs the BRZ. Unlike the GRC, this car has a direct competitor on the market so its more understandable for them to put out some special editions.

So there was a story going around the last day or two about a guy with a GR86 whose engine grenaded due to bearings, having his warranty denied by Toyota due to finding him on Social Media racing the car. But the thing about the story was that he showed the oil pickup tube clogged by RTV...

Now today everyone on the 2022 GR86/BRZ group on Facebook group are flipping out removing their oil pans and finding the same thing. Expect a lot of drama coming out of this

Reminds me of the early days of pick up tube failure and Subaru denying for what seemed like 10 years only to have been found of fault oil pickup tubes.

Probably going to be the case here too. Could be a specific production group of cars too.

I bet someone will start working on aftermarket solutions asap too since everyone will be ripping their pans off out of sheer paranoia...

If you don't want to deal with issues like this, don't buy a first model year car...

I suppose this is one plus side to being unable to obtain one of these. Assuming they actually fix this issue by then. And don't replace it with some other, worse issue.

At this point the only manufacturer I will consider buying a first year run from is Toyota/Lexus, and even then I'd expect small/teething problems from a GR Corolla for instance, but not potentially engine destroying problems which seem to have plagued manufacturers more frequently as of late.

Dates back to 2013 gray crap in pick up tube for oil

https://www.motortrend.com/news/toyo...drifting-pics/

Alvarado says a post-failure engine teardown revealed grey sealant material in the oil pickup, an issue that is now being tracked in a spreadsheet by GR86.org, which currently lists five suspected instances of the issue causing engine failure, not including similar claims dating back all the way to 2013, as Alvarado says.

I'm also curious why Toyota is getting all the press, when it's a Subaru engine... Is Subaru not declining warranties?

Probably just the numbers at this point. There are probably 4 times as many 86's out there vs BRZ. Better odds of getting a combo of failure + s***ty dealer.

Do you also get a free track day with the BRZ?
Also, isn't it just that one person having his engine repair denied at this point?

No track day with the BRZ. Yet to check my dipstick. Annoying prospect, but I'm not panicking.

No idea if / how true, but from the DRIVE article:

Quote:
By comparison, warranty engine replacements for the Subaru BRZ are relatively easy, according to owners. This does not appear to be the case with Toyota.

Hrm... that's pretty interesting. I'm still targeting purchasing one of these in a few years, so I'll be at least loosely following this. I really like the gr86 blue, but would probably settle for a wrb brz if I had to. Hopefully the HKS supercharger will be ready by then.
