Stinger is so ugly, I’d go for an Acura or even a Camry.

Honda with the new CTR, VW, and Toyota will be taking the money in by the boat Load with the new performance *GAS* models. Good for them. And Toyota has actually being racing in WRC.

Wow. You are truly pathetic Subaru. You let the STI die on a vine by handicapping it with the same 300hp engine for decades, you let it become the last in its segment for performance cars, and then when time came you can't even release a car with the same 315hp the golf R has? You wasted development money only to chuck it in at the last minute? You had a viziv performance STI concept which previewed nothing.

I was always leaning towards the type R after the bf2042 like reveal to the wrx, but I had hoped to compare and contrast the sti and type R.

Massive L. The golf R, corolla GR, and type R are gonna sell bucket loads.

RIP wrx sti. You deserved better.

^TBH I'm really ok with a car company sticking to a platform for a long time if it works (The EJ). It makes for lower cost / more widely available parts, more interchangeable parts, greater platform knowledge, less re-tooling by the manufacturer, ability to keep a car longer... the list goes on. I suspect that most people who have had bad issues with theirs are one or a combination of improper maintenance, abuse, unrealistic expectations, poor choice in parts, and / or bad tuning. Most of the EJ's "issues" have been sorted out, if you pay attention to the right people. At the end of the day (for 99% of us) we're still talking about a somewhat practical / hopped up / fun DD, not a supercar/race car.

My first few cars (which were domestic and very poor choices in cars), the company dropped each platform after ~5-7 years. This made getting parts, knowledge, and getting repairs that I didn't know how to do at the time (young kid) a NIGHTMARE.

Otherwise yeah, I more or less agree with you.

Right up until the point you start throwing it around corners. I’ve driven every P model Tethla thus far. And your comments = Batteries weigh a lot. Your comments wreak of highway pulls and on ramps and NOT cornering.

It's why they went conservative with the WRX as well. I imagine Subaru was forced with going back to the EJ257 or simply cancelling and sitting out the generation.

@Pre ^Yup. Building from that: I wonder how many Tesla owners are happy at the turnaround time trying to get theirs fixed / get parts. I also wonder how many people realize that oil will always be necessary because it's used in every form of production, and to make every other item we use on a daily basis. I REALLY wonder how people think that shifting oil use from vehicles, toward mining for metals is going to make a huge difference. Not to mention that nobody wants to hang around a fuel/ charging station for as long as it takes to recharge... wonder how those lines will be when everyone and their brother needs a charge. Not to mention if the infrastructure for that ever gets built.

Back on topic: I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to a hybrid STi... so long as it retained it's fun-ness / continued to have exclusively a manual gearbox. In a way, hybrid is the answer to turbo lag. Also the mileage benefits. Sell it for emissions, use it for fun. But like was previously stated... the weight of it all would be really bad.

This is all the dick slinging consumers care about, anymore. Ever since 0-60 became such a big thing. People always look confused when I tell them my STI really isn't that fast in a straight line, because no one cares about the feel of a vehicle or how it handles, anymore. Very few understand the pleasure of driving.

I'm glad I have my 18. I'll strongly consider just buying an extended warranty and keeping it for several more years after the warranty expires next year. (I won't own an EJ without a warranty.)

I genuinely never saw this coming. At least the STI is special again......

Best of luck to those who want to buy an unmodified gently used one. You're going to pay out the ass. Call me in a few years when I'm ready to get rid of mine... if ever.

Wonder how much fossil fuels are going to be needed to reliably power those charging stations. Do people not realize electricity doesn't generate itself? (Except lightning...)

^lol so true

It just occurred to me that Honda blew a great opportunity awhile back with the CRZ. It could've been a fanboy's wet dream that was also politically safe: a spiritual successor to the CRX, small / lightweight, modern tech, hybrid..... So what did they do? No power! No fun for you! Heck I might've gotten one of those back in the day instead, if they got that right. I'm not a honda guy, but I do like them mostly.

I haven't looked into the Corolla GR much, but if it has a manual option that's gonna be hard to say no to.

When I'm being really honest with myself, I have to ask: What does the STi really compete against at/near it's price point? The Eclipse/Galant/Evo (sadly) are gone. Most other turbo/awd platforms are from brands I don't trust (looking at you, germany and USA), or don't offer manual (mazda3) <which is odd to me, because mazda has been great about offering a manual lineup in their n/a vehicles. So, from a business standpoint I sorta get where Subaru is coming from.

In my ideal world which could never possibly exist, Subaru would make the STi a 2-door sedan-only, 6-speed manual-only, awd, turbo, 4 or 6 cylinder monster, with both direct injection and secondary (rail/manifold) injectors, with either no ICE or a non-integrated ICE (single/double-din) and just call it the STi.... a real halo car.

But ya....i was right....i called it m..fr's. But hey ill say it again The next STI will be electric..too many flagship sports cars are going electric and subaru should have brought out the 2.4FA i. 2015 for the STI...because now its already obsolete..the EJ won.

The next STI will be electric. BOOM!!! Drops mic....dozes off to sleep as STI values instantly skyrocket.

I am NIGHTHAWKSTI

The CR-Z had a manual.

Honda's old IMS hybrid system (a 14hp assist motor) was just worthless. For comparison, the modern Honda 2-motor hybrid system uses a 181hp (or 151hp) traction motor. So a 2022 Insight is significantly faster and more efficient than the CR-Z was.

Alrighty then, I admit that I was wrong. Good to know / I definitely wrote that car off too quickly back in the day.

Man this is pathetic on Subaru's part. STI dies with a whimper, stuck on the ancient EJ platform and the same power level for almost 2 decades, became basically irrelevant before Subaru killed it off today. This car deserved better, this is almost as bad as how Mitsubishi handled the Evo ffs.

Though I will say I am extremely glad I got a 2021 WRX last year instead of sticking with my CTR and waiting for the next STI. Going to just keep my WRX and throw mods at it. There's not a lot of cars under 50k in the market now and in the near future that interest me.

Thanks bud. I actually bought my VA wrx from a dealership in Auckland, I was one of the first in the country to buy a manual wrx in the first shipment.

By killing off the STI, subaru has told me and other enthusiasts like me to look elsewhere and not even ask me to consider any options from them versus the competition.

Hope you enjoy the gr corolla. /I'm out

Agree with you. A drivers car ain’t acceleration only. F that. It’s the combo meal. Most do not see it and never will.

Your ‘18. Retire it. Buy a DD. Any STi, especially before the center diff change, instant 10k increase. Pivot from DD to collector’s item.

This. That’s the guy who really nailed it. The EV STI better be something special, but I suspect it is many, many years away.

It does make sense that they just couldn’t make things work with the engine and said fudge it let’s wait till next gen and work on some hybrid/ev. This is supported by the fact that they had an STi Viziv concept just like the WRX and Doll’s letter justifying things due to regulations plus saying that the next STI won’t be based on this current generation’s car.

This is just baffling and truly spectacular. They’ve had the FA24 for years and the VA came in 2014, they couldn’t even figure things out? it’s not like this new WRX gets even remotely decent mileage. With this sudden news and all this speculation it feels like they just recently made the decision so they’re probably only now starting to work on that next STi lol see you in 8 years if at all STI….

IMO, they realized making the STI with the FA24 would be way too expensive with the things the way they are. They pulled the plug while they could. Think about how bad the inflation is going to get and how much cars went up in cost. This car would have been over 50 grand with all the things people expected out of it. The WRX has a lot left on the table. They can continue to increase the power with the updates and add DCC to more trims and still make it affordable in the grand scheme of things. Also, they still have the BRZ as their halo car. What is super weak is the way they let the STi die...I can't get over that. At the very least they should have released a limited final edition with S209 goodies. Shame on you Subaru for letting an icon like that go out without a bang...
