Question ATTN Windows gurus - 98SE flashback edition!

anybody got any idea why my laptop is crapping out?

got messages about the following being missing, so i replaced them:

vnetsetup.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd
APIENUM.vxd

also received a message about HIMEM.SYS being missing, but it's there. i replaced it anyhow.

i get the BSOD after the 2nd Win98 splashscreen. i'm toying with replacing the last .vxd that the system looks for before i get the error (msmouse.vxd).

anybody got any tips? i've about exhausted the web, including all the German pages that i could read.

IBWin98?!?!?

If you can bootup in safemode, delete the autoexec.bat and reboot.

Edit: or just boot to a DOS prompt and delete it

Can you boot to a DOS prompt? If so, do it from there.

reinstall not an option, no media. this is a work computer and i'm trying to fix it before the desktop tech gets to it and pulls the old "oh, i know . . . reimage!" card on me.

That's pretty much it. The vredir, vnetsup, etc are all network drivers. The way to correctly replace them is to go under the network control panel, remove TCP/IP, reboot, add TCP/IP, reboot... and it should fix it.

But the mouse error... that's bad. No clue what's causing that..... time for a reinstall!

Before you reinstall Windows, delete the friggin autoexec.bat! That might be all you need to do in order to get back into Windows to fix whatever other problems there are.

Where did you get the .vxd files from? It sounds like you got the files from a non SE version of 98. This will cause this sort of behavior.

The best thing to do would be to manually extract the .vxd files you need from the .cab files on the 98SE CD that was used to install Windows on your laptop. You can use the DOS command "extract" to extract from .cab files. This should either be on your system, or on the Win 98 SE disc. Good luck!

P.S. I'd suggest backing up the autoexec.bat instead of deleting it. There may be something configured in there that you need.

I'd definitly try getting the .vxd files from the CD then. No telling what may be different between his system and yours.

This is more than likely your culprit. I had the same version of Windows on both me and my wife's machine (back in the days of using 98, or maybe it was ME) and had to copy over some .vxd files from her machine. I couldn't get them to work, so I restored the .vxd files from CD. Viola, problem solved.

no CD. that's what is infuriating. i did a req. order for the laptop when 2000 first came out. the machine came loaded with 2000, but since it wasn't guidelined by our company yet, the techs who received the computer slapped the 98SE image on it. the only recovery CDs i have are the ones that came with the laptop . . . for WIN2K.

time to start rummaging though some desks.

Hell, just get the stuff you need while you're in DOS and try to upgrade to 2K. Then call the techs.
