Default Opinions about UMass Amherst

Hey everyone. I'd like to hear peoples opinions about UMass Amherst and specifically about their college of engineering. I am thinking about applying there next year to study Mechanical Engineering. If anyone is currently attending the university, or even better studying engineering there right now or has graduated from there, I'd love to hear some opinions/thoughts. Thanks so much.

^^true. I just visited the campus last weekend. took route two the whole 2hrs. very beautiful. also Raj, when I went there it was great weather (85 degrees and sunny) and all the girls were out sunbathing in bikinis or walking around with hardly anything on. It was great!

noone goes there to go to school. you go there because it is disneyland for 18-22 year olds. i only go up there to visit friends all the time, great parties especially the hobart hodown. lots of people flunk out tho because they party too much good luck with that

suby4ub partied too much even for community college and would be done for if he ever attended amherst

I'm an honorary graduate from there. My GF now wife went there and I was up there very other weekend if not every weekend.

I have heard excellent things about their engineering program. I couldn't refer you to anyone because the 'engineers' that I knew back them moved away.

I graduated from UMASS last May with a mechanical engineering degree. It took me 5 years to do it, partly because I transferred into the major, and partly because that's just how long it usually takes. It is a 4 year program, but I would plan on at least 4.5.

I would say that bang for the buck you can't get a better degree though if you are from MA. I definitely feel like I got a good education. I think at a smaller(more $$) school I would have been helped along a little bit more. But the UMASS engineering department you are pretty much on your own, with the help of your classmates. The professors definitely do not babysit you. Be ready to work hard, not neccessarily for your first couple of years, but for your last two. Towards the end when all of my roomates were partying I was regularly putting in at least ten hour days, if not more. Hope this helps.

I can't speak for the engineer majors but right now i'm a junior at umass. I think it really depends on the type of person you are. It really is an awesome party school. you could go out 4 nights a week for 4 years if you really had the desire. There would be a couple thousand people right there with you. I have to say that some days i'm just not in the mood, and the social side of this place can get really aggrevating. Like last week on a tuesday night there were kids from the town houses throwing glass bottles over the fence from 50 yards away onto the roof of my apartment and others. At 3am, on a TUESDAY. yeah, so be ready to study hard and play hard as an engineering major. But overall, you can't beat the value of the college for money - not by a long shot. stop by if you are ever in the neighborhood - #352 puffton. GL on the decision .

Wow, brings back memories. I used to live in Puffton village too. 555Sideways is right, you really can party 4 nights a week and have plenty of people to do it with. But if you are in engineering you can only do that for the first two years...

I'm looking at colleges right now and UMass Amherst was one of the ones that I considered. The only two things that (I found) were difficult were that the campus is huge and you really have to have a good idea of where you're going. The second thing I have heard from many people, including my English teacher (her son attended UMass Amherst), was that Amherst is a very large party school.

Overall, though, I am a big fan of the UMass system and I would say go for it. It's a good school.
