Another vote for the Tahoe, just make sure its got the bose sound system, the Z71 package and you don't need to do anything to it.

I used to tow my boat around with my ex's Tahoe with no problem.

Buick Rendezvous?

IIRC they were available with a 3rd row and AWD

Should be cheap on the used market, and parts should be pretty cheap.

Except that it's RHD, expensive for what it is and the local dealer can't look up parts for it. (if you have the P/N they can probably get the parts though, I order stuff all the time)

Being the OP is near Canada enough, he just needs to go import one from Vancouver. The Canadian dollar is weak. Plenty up there for around $5-6k Canadian which is around $4k USD.

How old are you willing to go? Toyota Previa AWD would be my answer for super cheap. Landcruiser is the best option though.

Only buy a Land Rover from CarMax, and go ahead and score the longest extended warranty possible. Plan on driving their loaner vehicles longer than you drive the actual SUV you purchased.

Are there still trailblazers on the road with working 4wd? My sister had one where the front axle broke the actuator housing and left the vehicle. Every one I saw in the junkyard had already been stripped for parts or had the same failure so I just made a block off plate to keep the oil in the diff and called it a day.

This, plus the seats can be flipped around. I had one in high school that I flipped the middle seat around to face the rear and used to have a buddy drive us around while me and my other buddies smoked weed in the back. They do pretty good off road just don't take it on the beach.

They made the Mitsubishi outlanders with an optional 3rd row seating and 4wd. TBH the 3rd row is more meant for munchkins. But one can be had for relatively cheap.

Interesting. I don't really want/need a truck (I've already got an F-250). But maybe... I just wrote off the Honda/Nissan/Toyota truck based SUVs because a) they're trucks, and b) they hold their value too well... I'd end up needing a 20 y/o one to stay in my toy budget.

Bleh. This is supposed to be fun/interesting! I don't want another GM SUV on ill fitting wheels. Did the Saab version of the Blazer ever have 7 seats?

Cool idea... but I'd never get my wife to let me park a lifted Astrovan in my driveway, let alone ride around in it with me.

I don't mind how bad the Tribeca looks. Every time I see one, I hear the NASIOC Update Tribeca voice in my head... "haaaay guys.... what-cha doin'?"... and I laugh a little inside.

I hadn't thought about the Pilot. I just figure, once they're a gen or two old, the Honda and Acura versions are about the same price, and the Acura's are just nicer.

I rented one of those ages ago when they had first come out... it was pretty bad. But I also rented a new Buick sedan 2 years ago, and it was sweet. I have no idea where the Rendezvous sits today... maybe something to look at.

A lifted Previa would be cool. I looked for them, but everything I found was gutless, super high mileage, and beat to ****. Also, AWD was impossible to find.

I love my flex, no real issues in 4 years of ownership. Its just a poverty SEL AWD version, but nice enough for when my Mom visits and we need the extra seating. Does well in the snow as well.

That Sienna was actually a real, running SEMA show car done up by Toyota. The answer to the door question is at 1:07 in this video:

(CN: It goes straight out sideways, because show cars don't need to park in parking lots.)

sperry: Given that you're in Portlandia why not a Tribeca? Those were unloved and must be near that price range nowadays.

Not wanting one because they're old is fine. But the the 80 Series Land Cruisers are arguably one of the most dependable vehicles ever made. For the newer ones you're talking about they switched to an IFS front end with a weaker diff, a V8 with a timing belt vs the I6 w/ a timing chain, no more full float rear axle, and dropped to 5 lug wheels.

If anything is going to last forever it would be the 80 Series.

An 80 series will last forever because it's impossible to build up enough speed to crash into something with enough force to damage it.

No doubt an older LC is fantastic. But it's just not what I'm looking for. Those are real-deal off-road capable. I'm looking for something more car-like. If I was looking for a camping rig, then definitely the premium for a nice indestructible 80 Series without any real bells and whistles is fine. But I want a winter DD with creature comforts.

This is awesome:

But this is more in line with what I'm looking for...

I just want something with 7-seats and some towing capacity since I basically already have two cars like a Forester and I don't want to mess around with lifting either one.
