Exclamation Which head gaskets on EJ22T with EJ25 SOHC heads?

Yeah yeah, I did a search and came up with some good stuff but not enough for my liking.

On my first EJ22T, I used the EJ22T gaskets. After 3,000 miles of 9-10psi I looked at the head gaskets and they looked perfect still.

I always prefer to use a head gasket that is made for the same size bore but have heard of a lot of people using EJ25 SOHC head gaskets on their EJ22T buildup with EJ25 heads. I am very hesitant to do that. I have a couple questions:

1) what is the compressed thickness of the MY00 EJ25 and 91-94 EJ22T headgaskets?

2) which do you run? any problems?

I need to know quick because I need to get these gaskets ordered up. The block came in today! woo-hoo! Thanks!

I would stick with the EJ22T gaskets, personally. I wouldn't want to mess with the quench area.

BTW, why are you asking US motor build questions?

hehe. THat's why I stated that I hesitate to use a head gasket not made for a specific bore . I would NEVER do that on a small block Chevy or any american engine that I know of. I never even comprehended the idea until I heard of people using the EJ25 head gaskets on the EJ22T. And honestly, I still loath the idea of having such a large area that is off on the sides of the bore where fuel could pool, hotspots could form, and numerous other things could go wrong.

But, I figured I'd let everyone else voice there opinion also to see if anyone could give me hard evidence of why I should go with a head gasket designed with a different engine (namely, a bigger bore).

yes eric i 100% agree...and there is a REASON for this...copper gaskets LEAK...engine builders don't use them for a reason and neither do i...done 2, both leaked...replaced w/ steel and no problems since. Eric i would stick with the EJ22T gaskets...i'll see if i can get ya a part number sometime tommorrow. Glad to see you are still around and the car is still in your hands(for now)...i'll PM ya my cell number so you can get ahold of me, or PM me yours...whichever.

Jeremy- What is the advantage of using the EJ22 Gasket? I was told to use the EJ25 one.... was this a BAD idea? Thanks!

The diameter or the cylinder bore on the EJ25 is much larger then the EJ22, so there will be much more room between the cylinder wall and the head where there used to be a gasket. That can cause hot spots, fuel pooling, etc like Eric had said in his 3rd post up above.

well i use the EJ25 gaskets... and i've been running the combination for more than a year and a half.... i agree with the theories tho... but everyone i talked to also runs the EJ25 gaskets... i don't know which is best... but probably getting STI heads is the best hehehe

exactly...but IIRC the EJ22T gaskets are some weird material where as the EJ25 gaskets are 3 layer steel.

IIRC, the EJ25 gaskets are graphite composite but it's been a while since I've seen one. The EJ22T are the older style standard gaskets with raised silicon beads. Whatever the case may be, I'm getting the EJ22T gaskets because I no matter how hard I try, I can;t make myself get a gasket that is for a larger bore engine.

Why don't you go to the dealership and take a look at a modern 2.2L gasket? I'm willing to bet that last years' L's had updated 2.2L gaskets, maybe even 3-layer like the current 2.5L ones.

I asked because I wanted to see if anyone could pursuade me but I realized i can;t be pursuaded.

Nick: IIRC, the 2.2L head is different than the EJ22T head. I saw it on someones website and some other thread. Besides, I didn;t have any problems with the old gasket and I know many people with a stock Legacy EJ22T with well over 100,000 miles on it and no head gasket problems.

You sure about that? I know that the older EJ22's were supposed to be different, but I would think that since you have SOHC RS heads on it, they'd match up just fine. I know that open-deck motors rely on the coolant passages in the head (since there is just jackets in the block), so I would think as long as the EJ22's in the L's used SOHC heads (and Subaru liked using parts for multiple applications) that they'd mate fine. If I were you, I'd take a SOHC RS gasket and compare it to the EJ22 gasket from the L.

Then after all that, you have to decide which you'd rather use... the new EJ22 gasket, or the old EJ22 gasket.

I received the gaslets today (EJ22T). I was wrong about their construction. Honestly, I don;t know what they are. hehe. They are like an extremly dense fiber gasket of some sort. not sure what though. No raised silicon beads around the water jackets which is fine. but, the buildup has begun again which is all I care about
