Outback Sport pinging at 4k rpm

stock 07 EJ253 @30k miles (in an OBS). [since i bought] it i get high pitched bubbling like vibration at 4k rpm. goes away right after 4.

is it the ALVS engaging or something else? i tried running 89 and it seemed to be the same. anything to be worried about?

doesn't sound like engine pinging... but it does sound like a silly 07 problem... put your hand on the shifter and put just a bit of pressure on... does it go away?

I've read that avls is always on when the throttle is applied, it doesn't kick in yo.

bump for similar issue in 2004 RS. Rattling from shifter (I think its a bushing?) that goes away when I place my hand on it.

if you pull off the shifter boot piece you can get to the problem (at least this is what fixed it for me)

you need to regrease the cup/ball where the shifter rotates from at the base, and possibly the bushing where it it connects to the linkage and maybe tighten the bolt, but not too tight as this will make shifting very hard.

Look up short shifter install here or kartboy's site or scoobymods.net for how to remove the shifter.

typical for our cars. I got a linkage thingie changed (sorry for not being more specific.. it was underneath thecar, close to the tranny ), it helped a bit. Another way to help is to pop out the shifter, and fill the place where the ball goes with grease. I would use the rattle as an excuse to get a short shifter with bushings though
