The '09 was the car with the notable bearing problems and even then it was just a batch. The EJ has had problems with spun bearings whenever someone tunes one aggressively without upgrading the oiling system. A cheap leaky BOV is a great way to lean out your tune and get some detonation leading to spun bearings. It was nice of Subaru to warranty the engine.

Correct. I went back to the original thread I created when the issue happened and her car is a 2009. I misspoke.

Professional install of a Tial BOV. Even if it was leaky, that would only serve to enrich the mixture, not lean it out. Less air than what was metered with the same fuel = richer.

It could never cause the detonation you're talking about.

I don't think spacewilly was stating the supercharger would void the entire car warranty. The point is TRD/Toyota would warranty the supercharger for the life of the original powertrain warranty (parts & labor) if you have the dealer install the supercharger. If you purchase the supercharger from TRD/Toyota and install it yourself or by another shop, then TRD/Toyota would warranty only the supercharger for 12mo/12,000miles (excluding labor). The rest of the original car warranty would still be valid (bumper-to-bumper and powertrain) in either case given that the supercharger was properly installed and not modified.

So essentially by having the dealer installing it you get an extra warranty on the supercharger at the cost of dealer installed price. It's similar to how Subaru treats SPT parts.

Ah that makes more sense. I guess time for someone to do some in-depth analysis of which would cost more in the long run?

I would think having Toyota install it is a huge benefit. Sure it has higher up front cost for install vs another shop but in the end if the supercharger or engine go boom, drop it off at Toyota and have them rip it apart and fix it at their cost and time. Now if you install it yourself, well maybe then the cost savings would be more beneficial.

I wouldn't think Toyota or Subaru would share the love (no pun intended) if you install the TRD supercharger on a BRZ.

correct! I just meant that if you put the supercharger on yourself, and later on something goes wrong with the engine that may or may not have anything to do with the supercharger, they will say the warranty is voided and you'll be buying yourself a new engine. The 12-year/12,000 mile warranty is for the supercharger parts only, it won't help you if your engine blows up. If you get the TRD SC and the dealer installs it, they will still perform any engine related warranty work that might come down the road (if your engine blows up). I think it's worth keeping the warranty on a brand new engine that could still have some undiscovered issues.

Default BRZ/86/FR-S Coupes Miss on New Forester’s 250HP Turbo'd Boxer Because it Won’t Fit!

Carscoop: http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2013/02...foresters.html

Quote:
Ever since the production version of the FT-Concept(s) came out in the form of the Toyota 86/GT 86, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S trio of practically identical rear-wheel drive coupes, everyone has been asking whether a more powerful version, most likely with forced induction, was on the cards.
It made sense as Subaru, which has actually designed the all-new 2.0-liter normally aspirated flat-four with Toyota adding its unique fuel injection system, has a long history of using turbocharged boxer engines in its models.

The company’s engine design department project team manager, Nobuo Kyotoku, was asked the exact same question by WardsAuto, which named the 2.0L FA (the motor’s designation) one of its 10 best engines of the year. The answer was “yes” and “no”…

Yes, a turbocharged version of the all-aluminum FA is already in production: it's under the hood of the newly-introduced Forester crossover and puts out 250HP and 349.4 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

And no, because that engine will most definitely not be fitted in the BRZ or its two other siblings. May we ask why?

Because, according to Kyotoku, unlike the high-riding SUV, there’s insufficient space in the engine compartment of the low coupes to add the bottom-mounted turbocharger.

“Developing this high-technology, high-revving, lightweight engine was a difficult challenge and the development time was very short compared to other programs”, he said. “But the idea of the project was to please customers, and we feel very good about the customer feedback we have received.”

What about those customers who feel the chassis can certainly handle more than the 200HP and 204 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque that’s currently on offer?

Kyotoku-san said that they could improve performance by other means, such as reducing friction and enhancing combustion, or using “electrically-driven accessories”.

I agree that it makes sense to have it dealer installed, but it won't help the BRZ only the FRS warranty wise.
