Cosworth Will Be The Sole Engine Supplier in 2010 Formula One
The legendary Cosworth name could return to Formula One racing in 2010 if the FIA pushes ahead with plans to introduce standardised engines, one of three options being offered to the teams should they fail to come up with their own viable cost-cutting measures.
The FIA revealed on Friday that they are in exclusive negotiations with Cosworth, along with gearbox specialists Xtrac and Ricardo Transmissions (XR), to supply a complete low-cost power train that will be made available to all teams. The engine will be based on the current V10 specification, while the gearbox will be an all-new, state-of-the-art unit. The other engine options being proposed by the FIA are for teams to build their own engines to Cosworth's specifications, or to continue with their current ***8216;frozen' V8s. In both cases, the engine would be paired with the standard XR transmission. A number of teams have already voiced their opposition to the standardised engine concept and are expected to put forward alternative engine proposals to be considered by the FIA at next week's World Council meeting. Friday's FIA announcement follows news that Honda is to pull out of Formula One racing in light of the global economic downturn, a move that FIA President Max Mosley said further emphasises the need to bring the cost of competing in the sport under control. "As the guardians of the sport, the FIA is committed to working with the commercial rights holder and the remaining members of FOTA to ensure that Formula One becomes financially sustainable," read an FIA statement. Should any teams decide to take up the FIA's Cosworth offer, they have until next Thursday (December 11) to express their interest. Cosworth last participated in Formula One as suppliers to Williams and Toro Rosso in 2006. The source are copied from: http://www.formula1.com/news/headlin...8/12/8756.html

I'm pretty sure all the manufacturers would leave if this happened.

I at how dumb the FIA seems to be...we'll dictate them to constantly have to follow changing rules (costs money) to then keep costs down...or making them use new systems that take lots of money and R&D to develope i.e. KERS
They also seem to be killing the format of what F1 is. Displaying the best that each manufacturer can bring to the table. |

No it won't they've just been awarded the tender meaning that their engines can be bought for ~6-7 million.

imagine what they could do...a 1 liter v8 or v6 with a turbo the size of the biggest turbo ever dreamed of spinning to what would likely be close to jet engine speeds.
no power below 30k rpms...it would be one hell of a tach. also be one hell of a big bang when something let go. |

This is why I watch and enjoy time attack more and more over F1 now a days. You run what you brung; any power source, any power application.
The FIA always finds a way to give motorsports the short end of the stick. I can't blame them though, F1 funding is ridiculous. As great of a company Cosworth is, I don't see a standardized engine as being part of what is supposed to be the highest forum of auto racing. They might as well scrap the constructors title while they're at it. I don't care much for this kind of ruling in other forms of racing, but in Formula 1 it should not interfere with. Pure rubbish |

If it keeps more than 4 teams in it, I'm fine with a rule no one watching the racing will be able to see. The teams have spent too much money on F1 the last few years, and now rather then spend less, they're just going to quit, which is much worse for the sport than any rule change the FIA could think up.

Ferrari, and I think Honda or Renault, stated they would SERIOUSLY rethink staying in F1 if the FIA had a common engine.
In other words, do it and we'll be gone! |
