Default Why isn't the WRX compared to other all wheel drive cars?

drive cars. In like car and driver they always compare it to the SRt-4, the Saturn and the new chevy. How do they pick the competition? Is it size? Price? Why not compare it to other all wheel drive cars, or are they just in another class by themselves

In 2003 Car and Driver did a comparison test against the BMW 330xi, Audi S4, and WRX. The Audi won while the WRX came in second. One of the few Car and Driver test I've ever seen where a BMW came in last.

Because they do comparisons to what people will buy. Comparing the WRX to a AWD Jeep and an Endeavor is useless. They compare the competitors in a market. Hence somehting like STi vs Evo vs R32.

Simply because Subaru doesn't want itself compared to all the other "AWD" crap that's out there in the market....

HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE !!!!!

i guess they dont' really compare by drivetrain, but rather by all things you mentioned--size, price, utility, etc

car and driver is super cheap to renew...it's like 3 years for 26 bucks or something

no, it was before the STi came out.

They test it agianst those other cars that are FWD because nobody else makes an AWD car with good performance in the price range of the WRX. All of its competitors are 2WD. A comparison with 3 cars that a potential buyer wouldn't compare is a useless comparison. Unless its to show the differences.

Someone compared it to the Mustang too. I think it's cool that the WRX gets compared to like, every car under the sun, it kind of shows it's jack of all trades nature. Even better considering out of all the cars it's compared to, it's the only one that comes in sedan and wagon form.

Actually, it is pretty cool. Car and driver overall doesn't say many bad things about subies. Every once in a while they will attack the interior, but ONLY if it's in a category with another car that has a really nice interior. I believe it did lose out though to the EVO for overall performance when they both came out. It was a good article.

That article was written pretty much right after WRX landed on the state side, at the peak of the hype. Having that said, I don't think the last gen 330xi is such a blast to drive anyway. It's overpriced and underpowered. Search C&D website for the article. It's a fun read.

why? THe bmw had like 225 hp and the S4 like 250, and both were several hundred pounds heavier. The wrx was faster than the 330 and about tied with the S4.
